Thinking of Growing Chicken of the Woods, any Tips?

I've got a really beautiful Chicken of the Woods Agar plate, and am thinking of growing it, on account of it being delicious.
Has anyone done this before? I'd love some ideas on what sorts of substrates to use, and temp. ranges.

Mee too ...
I haven't seen it cultivated yet. If you manage to do it, please post lots of pictures and describe your materials & method!
Thanks & good luck.

I know that GGMM(Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms) by Paul Stamets does not have Chicken of the woods listed at all. This I assume means that it does not do well indoors.
That being says Paul`s other book Mycelium Running does have a Chapter on Laetiporus sulphureus here is a small exert that might help you out a little:
" Natural Habitat: First appearing in late spring and growing through early fall, growing primarily on Oaks. The conifer loving L. conifericola prefers hemlock(Sister species found west of the Rocky Mountains.)
Natural Method of Cultivation: Inoculating stumps or logs with plug or rope spawn. If stumps are checkered with fissures, then I recommend inserting plug spawn directly into he crack for fast growth.
Season and Temp range for Mushroom Formation: Primarily a summer mushroom, fruiting at 60-80F, maturing late in the season. "
There is about two pages of info on Chicken of the woods, I am not going to post it all here, I just posted what I feel was important and pertaining to your question. I would recommend grabbing the book Mycelium Running to anyone who does not have it. It is an invaluable resource in our hobby.

I gag on chicken of the woods. Mrs Rabbit likes the bitter taste, but if I was starving to death in the forest, it would still be a tough decision to force that thing down. I'd have to be near a creek to kill the aftertaste. That does appear to be a Hemlock tree. RR

I think there's a copy of mycelium running around here somewhere.
I'll post pics and details when I get it going.
Cheers.

Paul Stamets sells plug spawn of Chicken of the Woods thru his website. He suggests inoculating stumps with the spawn. I think LARGE logs might also work - not the small six inch diameter logs used for shiitake, but more like 18 inch diameter or larger.
My own attempts at fruiting this on sawdust have not been successful. The mycelium is light and fluffy - the blocks have no structural integrity to them at all. I think it needs to be grown in a solid chunk of wood, and I suspect it may require some sort of external co-factor, like bacteria or another fungus, to spur it into fruiting, but that's really just me guessing.

Man, I love Steve Don't Eat It. He's where I first found out about chicken of the woods, long before I was ever interested in growing mushrooms.

Had a chicken pop out of the ash tree in our front yard. First year it's ever done so.
So we grabbed some, ate it, and then cultured it to agar.

Good luck! During the past years I only came across one reported cultivation attempt which lead to formation of primordia. http://www.springerlink.com/content/y807070501n12kr8/

I have it. Though, not sure on the legality of sending it to you. Can you send me your email so we can discuss it further?
:EDIT: Scratch that. It's a two page paper with all of the necessary information on the first page which can be viewed on the website.

I got it, thanks! There is a protocol on the cultivation of this species that was developed by an Israeli.
If any has that, please share it.

Are you talking about the paper that Mycelio linked to? ORGANIC ACIDS AND CARBOHYDRATES FROM Laetiporus sulphureus FRUITING BODIES
If not, what paper are you referring to? I or someone else can very likely get it for you without you having to resort to paying that ridiculous price.
EDIT: For posterity's sake, here is the relevant bit (the growth parameters) in case the PDF ever gets a DMCA takedown:
Quote:
We used a culture of L. sulphureus (LS-BG-0804 strain) isolated and grown as before [1]. Fruiting bodies were grown under laboratory conditions in chambers at 21°C without low-temperature stimulation on sterile sunflower shell substrate. Immature fruiting bodies (primordia) appeared 14 d after the substrate was fully colonized with regular air-spray moistening.
