Beijing - China looks set to miss a smoking ban deadline
Annual tobacco-related deaths in China could triple by 2030 without drastic steps to kick the nation's habit.
The claim is made in a new report which blames the Chinese cigarette industry for blocking anti-smoking efforts.
By 2030, over 3.5m Chinese could die each year from smoking-related illnesses, according to Tobacco Control and the Future of China, a joint report by Chinese and foreign experts.
China recorded 1.2m smoking-related deaths in 2005.
China also looks set to miss a deadline to implement an indoor ban on smoking - the pledge was made when China became a party to the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) in 2006.
Under the framework, China agreed to enact national legislation banning indoor smoking by this year. State media have said the deadline is 9 January.
However, no such ban has been put in place and smokers in China continue to light up freely in restaurants and office buildings.
'The tobacco industry has become the largest 'health-hazard' industry,' said the report, sponsored by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
'Although it is a major 'taxpayer,' the industry is generating a much greater social burden,' it said.
China is now the world's largest tobacco producer and consumer and tobacco is the country's top killer, the report said.
It says cigarette industry interest groups have seriously undermined anti-smoking efforts and are a key barrier to effective tobacco controls.
An arrangement in which China's tobacco monopoly acts as the lead entity in implementing the 2006 tobacco control framework effectively allows the industry to use government authority to promote cigarette sales and impede adoption of anti-smoking policies and laws, it added.

As brutal as that is to say, it is so true. How about we worry more about their abhorrent disregard for environmental laws instead of caring if millions of people kill themselves with tobacco. This is what the world health organization is wasting its time on?

Those two factors are going to give them a lot of problems in years to come, I would say.

I love lighting up..but I'm actually starting to worry whether or not I'm gonna be one of the unlucky ones that dies of cancer or heart disease.
I think I'm gonna try to kick the habit after this last pack.

Yeah, you'll be better off without the things, in so many ways. Congrats on your decision to quit and good luck.
