Shiitake 75 on Sawdust/Woodchips/Bran

Rye grain spawn was inoculated with agar wedge. Spawned to wheat bran supplemented woodchips/sawdust. After the surface thoroughly browned (7 weeks) it was birthed and put in my greenhouse.
Before inoculation

4 days into colonizing

6 weeks, browning nicely

7 weeks, thoroughly browned, bag stripped

These pins appeared just 2 days in fruiting

A day later

The next day

Before and after harvest

Good experience over-all. About 9 weeks from grain inoculation to first harvest. Very tasty, large fruits.

And he grows edibles to!
Very nice grow. How much sawdust/woodchips did you use for that block?
I inoculated a 6lb bag of sawdust on the 16th with 1Q of Shiitake spawn (A Fungi Perfecti strain) and I cannot wait till I finally get some fruits! Hope they look half as tasty as yours my friend.

Thanks! It was actually a rather small substrate block, containing approximately 1qt of alder woodchips and 2qt of sawdust.

Not bad results!
I assume you sterilized the block as you supplemented it. I had leftover pasteurized sawdust from my reishi mono project and spawned to that.
Not sure what will happen but time will tell!
Congrats on the Trusted Cultivator Tag, FINALLY eh! You have had it coming for a long time brother, looks good.

Nice. This is the stage you want to pick them at. Quality and shelf life are much higher. Once they flatten out and start puking spores everywhere, they go downhill fast. RR

Yes, thanks RR. I've been working a lot lately, and Shiitake grows sooo fast. I didn't pick them in the morning, went to work till 11pm, then got to sleep without checking them. Next morning I've got the huge flattened out mushrooms. While I was taking pictures I could totally see the caps dropping spores. It looked like very light smoke coming from the gills.

Awesome as always... I saw it sitting in the back of your greenhouse, in a few of your other pics... Was wondering when you would say something about it

Haha, thanks! Yeah, I can't keep my mouth shut for a long time about cultivating new species... This was my first attempt to L. edodes and it's not outstanding, but I'm certainly not disappointed either.

I have to shut off the fans in my grow room daily and remove the blades for cleaning. I'll often get 1/4" of spore buildup on each blade during 24 hours. On the plus side, since everything is painted white, the spores help cover the rust spots. RR

Be careful with that. You could get a spore infection in your lungs. Someone in my family is a anesthesiologist and warned me for that. It can cause respiratory problems and toxicity.

As I'm well aware. It's why I only grow Shiitake. So far, it hasn't shown to be toxic the way oyster mushroom spores are. I have no other allergies. I never get hay fever or any other reactions. It's only oyster spores and only after a few years of exposure.
This is the reason nobody should sleep in the same room they grow. Those hours at night add to your total spore exposure and greatly reduce the time you can grow oysters before you have to give up on them. RR

Great stuff Stonesun, just birthed my 1st 75 blocks yesterday, in a makeshift martha.
What kinda Air exchange and humidity you keeping those at?
Did you have constant AE in there and did you drop the humidity to 60- 80% for fruitbody development as Staments suggests in GGMM?
They look great, see my grow here man.could always use good advice. Wanna nail these tasty fellas.

I try to work with spores as less as possible, but sometimes it's inevitable. It's a shame that you can't work with oyster. Not even when you wear a mouth mask?
