cake idea, more flushes?
    #1376123 - 03/14/03 01:54 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

My question is why could you not, or do people not crumble extra damp vermi in with their cakes, as well as a casing layer - the mycellium would no doubt colonize it, and could then use it for more moisture, no?

I mean like an extra half cup of damp vermi crumbled in with the cake, then the casing layer added on top of that.

Make sense? Any ideas?

I think thats a valid idea. I personally cant see how it wouldnt work. It might take longer though and i dont think you could actually put enough verm on it so that you could see a big increase in the flushes, without  it taking forever but thats my guess.

You know.. I just dont know.

With cakes it's kinda like the double ended tek. You can exactly put it on the sides, unless you put it into a nother container, which then it would be considered a casing.

Why people dont mix some casing within their substrate when making casings is because it requires extra work and doesnt help any. It may help in an initial boost of moisture, but once that (the casing mixed within) dries out it really doesnt really get any more water to absorb. When misting or what not, the top layer is really the only thing that keeps getting a supply of water, which then goes straight to the substrate/shrooms.

Maybe it would help if you sprayed alot of water each time, so that it could filter to the rest, that way you wouldnt need to spray as often. I hope that makes some sense, and it is only my theory so I could be totally wrong.

If you have ever made a casing layer too think on a casing, you would see that there is a problem with too much casing material. Since it is nonnutriative layer, mycelium doesnt really colonize it, so if its too think, it wont even reach the surface.

What my friend does is puts a layer of verm on the bottom of the casing and then he mixes moist verm with his WBS and then cases it with coco coir and verm. Then when the substrate starts to shrink he adds watter down the side inbetween the substrate and the container to the bottom layer of verm. This gives great flushes. And he adds misting to the casing layer inbetween flushes. If you guys have any more questions about how this works just ask I would be more than happy to help you out.

I do the same thing, besides the crumbling of extra verm in with the substrate. I dont think it really makes any difference.

I think it helps the WBS cause it dries out so much it gives it an extra boost. From what my friend says it makes a difference. To get things moving faster along.

I agree, WBS really does dry out alot, maybe it helps then. I dont know, I've moved on to Popcorn, it's just easier for me especially since I dont spawn.

I do popcorn same as any grain. I soak for about 18 hours (not needed, just for percaution), rinse, drain well and PC. You know.. that good stuff. I've used both white, yellow, and a mixture of the two, never noticed a difference. They colonize fast, but take a while to get started with spores. You can get it at pretty much any convenience store. Just get the cheap kinda in the 4 lb bag, it's not buttered or anything. 4Lbs makes about a gallon of substrate.. I think its like 2 bucks.

So just normal popcorn not buttered. Do you have to simmer it before you soak it? thanks for the help extravagant

No simmering required, but you can do it if you want. all you really need to do is add water and PC, but i soak just to get the endospores going.. easier to kill that way. Just treat popcorn like you would any other grain.

I'm of the opinion that increasing the available moisture to mycelium is a good thing if you're trying to fruit, but I'm not certain mixing verm in with the chunks and then casing would make that much of a difference.
