Why chinchillas hate rye grains

I don't know why my friend's chinchilla can't get rye to work right. He soaks overnight, he simmers it to perfection, he pressure cooks it in jars with a polyfill filter hole for an hour at 15 psi, and still he loses some to bacteria. Plus when he's incubating it at 85 degrees, the grains on the bottom of the jar always seem to shrivel up and dry out. The chinchilla complains to my friend about this all the time, and he doesn't know what else to do. He sees other people's rye fully colonizing in a little over a week, while his are always barely at 5% after a week. The chinchilla said if this rye stuff fails him again he's going back to BRF. Is there anything that can give this poor chinchilla hope?

maybe your friend should shake the jars to equalise moisture. also, they're not sitting on a heat pad, by any chance?

The jars get shaken often, says the chinchilla, and yes there is a heating pad in a second rubbermaid container underneath. This is the chinchilla's only way of heating.

From dewds experience grain tends to dry from the top down as there is more air exchange around the poly filter. The fact that there drying from the bottom makes me think that yer cooking them jars.
How are you getting your 85f reading? If you haven't done so already, you might want to check the surface temp on wherever you have your jars setting.

Try this with WBS............ CLICK HERE: Soak WBS overnight, then rinse & drain WELL
Load jars 5/8ths to 3/4 full.
Add tyvek filter material
Add lid
Add lid ring
Or use a plastic lid
Add double coffee filters as an extra external dust cover
Load PC & PC for 60 to 90 minutes @ 15 lbs
Remove jars while hot & shake, then cool overnight, then innoc.
Or, G2G.........................
Jump forward in time & here is whatcha end up with.

I never have a problem with Rye grain!
Fill quart jars with :
250 ml of Rye 210 ml of water
Put filter disc on jar. Tighten lid snug. (my lids have two holes...Large one in the middle, smaller one off to the side for inoculations).Masking tape is covering both holes. Leave jars sitting for 24 hours to let the endo spores germinate....before pressure cooking.
Pressure cook at 15 psi for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Let pressure cooker cool down...a little over an hour. Pull jars out and shake them while they are still good and hot. Shake the jars up really good!!
I cover up the jars with a clean cloth and leave them on my kitchen counter over night to let the jars completely cool down.
In the morning I shake the jars again.
Then I pull the masking tape off the inoculation hole on the lid of the jar. I then inoculate the jar with a spore or mycelium syringe. Then I imediately put a small round bandaid over the inoculation hole on the lid of the jar.(100 small round bandaids are only $4.00). Then I shake the fucking shit out of the jars to distribute the spores or mycelium.
Stick jars into incubators.
Fina!~

After I talked to the chinchilla again, he said he just wanted to thank you all for the insightful and thorough responses. He has a lot more confidence now as a result. Chinchilla thinks the people, foafs, and various pets here at the Shroomery are very kind.
