First Grow no Vermaculite
    #13744962 - 01/06/11 11:22 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Ok this is my first time growing following the tek guide but I could not find vermaculite in any store so I made a following set of substrates and would like to know if any of them will work.
Jar #1. Moisture control Miracle grow & blended organic brown rice with a few pieces whole
Jar #2 Moisture control Miracle grow & Organic Corn meal

Jar #3 Fox Farm with Vermaculite & Blended Organic brown rice.

Please let me know if you think I will see growth in these jars or if im just wasting my time thanks!

Go to an actual garden supply store. I tried Lowes but they only had fine grade, same with hope depot.  You can get it online as well.  Look up local garden supply stores in your area and you can pick up a bag for around 3-5 bucks.

fine grade holds more water than coarse

But there's more surface area with coarse, plus, it makes the cake more airy so the mycelium can easilly grow.

Fine vermiculite is what you want.

Hearing it from the man himself, I think I'm sold

I'll definitely be changing how I make my cakes next time.

I would appreciate RR input on this considering he seems to be one of the most knowledgeable people on here.
