flat panel as in LCD or CRT? CRT=big and LCD=small like on laptops. welp bad news if its a LCD it's pretty much a grin and bear it situation as usually a repair on those lil buggers can run as much as buying a new one. Could be the behavior of the LCD's on their way to burnout. Use to sell laptops and once you got a non-responding or dark spot on the LCD it was pretty much done for.
-------------------- Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

I heard that TFTs only have a 3 year lifespan, if it lasts any longer you're lucky.

It could be a bad inverter board. The inverter is what powers the backlight which makes everything visible. I have seen bad inverters do some wierd things to a display.
It could also be your graphics card rather than the display. Does it do this on another computer as well?
It could also be the cable between the panel and the computer. If you wiggle the cable at the ends near where the connectors are, does it do anything?

my sony just took a shit to. Must be something in the air.
Sony has a new one out now I saw it at Bestbuy. It was bad ass but I didn't get a good look at it.It was 999.99 out of my price range
Mine was hooked to a nVida G-Force 4 also and worked fine.
My sony warranty sucked big balls. I dunno about yours but it's basicly a waste of time to try to deal with them.
