How Does This Look???
    #1373949 - 03/13/03 09:39 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Alright....tell me my fellow mushroom cultivators will this work for a beginner?

(btw: sorry about the crappy paint drawings)

The colonized jars would be placed all around the jar, obviously....I saw this tek and I thought it looked like a good idea. Just have to replace the watr whenever the water level gets too low.

and

Surprisngly, the light doesn't produce ANY heat even after prolonged use. It's battery operated and very bright (even though not much light is needed). The smaller container (which is transparant, for easier measuring with perlite and water) serves as an easy clean up method....so you simply just take the container out and rinse it out easily. The tray above the perlite container would be like a dish drainer shelf that the cakes could be placed on so that they aren't making direct contact with the perlite...or one could just use jar tops. The heating pad set on low at the bottom will help regulate the temp...the only concern would be drying out the perlite....or is that not even an issue if one maintains the water level?

So say if my grandma wanted to use these set ups for her mushroom cultivating would these set ups be effective?...Just let me know so I can inform good ol' granny.

[quote[url=http://www.shroomery.org/forums/files/030903-3/43033-thumb_incubator.jpg[/url]

looks good

this bit i'm not so sure about. the heatpad makes radiant heat. and that light looks rather bright.
but i'm a relative newbie too, so what do i know! good luck - if you're lucky one of the red, blue or green guys will come help you here.

you're all set. fill that incubator with babies!

you need to get rid of the plexiglass window on the incubation chamber. other than that it looks about right. The fruiting chamber does not need some of the things you listed. you just need a big container, some perlite, and a heat source. keep it simple, you will be happy in the end. SD1

oh and for the fruiting chamber you also need light....just get a flourescent night-lite, attach it to an extention cord, and put it on top of your chamber. as long as your chamber isnt made out of thick black or green plastic or something, enough light should penetrate through for pinning. SD1

Yo shroomadelic1 did you see BOTH pictures? The plexi-glass is in my INCUBATOR not my FRUITING CHAMBER so I can eaily see the thermometer instead of having to take the top off every time I wanna check...

The only concern I have is maintaing the correct temperature in the fruiting chamber.....the heating pad seems like a fine idea, but if anyone else has a different suggestion (that doesn't require taking up a lot of space) then please fill me in.

he's right. the window will stop the jars from colonising properly - they need complete dark (except when you're checked on them)

Shirley Knott....OMG your right....damn I should have realized that! After all my research I forgot that....oh well....the the plexi-glass will not be included in the incubator set up....or it can just be covered by something and then removed when one wants to check up on the temp....either way still works....just gotta remember that darkness is the key....thanx for pointing that out guys!!!

instead of a heating pad i used a waterbed heater. it gives you a temp dial to set it by and with the thermometer inside i can haven't had any problems maintaining the temp i need. i'm not sure of the cost of one of these since mine was given to me by someone that didn't use it anymore, but it might be comparable to a heating blanket and they can be picked up at any waterbed store without problem. i just thought this might help someone out. happy growing!!!!!

"you need to get rid of the plexiglass window on the incubation chamber."

no BS. colonizing jars need complete darkness to colonize at an acceptable rate. just force your lazy ass to actually REMOVE the lid whenever you must read the temp. I know its a bitch, but hey, its gotta be done. lol

yea heating pads are good. just put some towls, t-shirts and whatnot on top the heating pad until the correct temp is reached.
