Hylocereus spp. seed raising
    #13725913 - 01/03/11 05:18 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I recently started, well at least attempted to start some Hylocereus polyrhizus costaricensis seed, I sewed them about three to four weeks ago and have only had one germinate; which later died..

I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with growing Hylocereus spp. cacti from seed? What was your germination time like?

I researched the germination of Hylocereus spp. cacti; temp, light and moisture is all how it should, but still no sprouts.. I know three weeks isn't long, and that Hylocereus spp. seeds can take up to four months to germinate, but I would have expected more than one to germinate in the three or four weeks its been.. I have dissected a few seeds, the embryo's are still white and appear alive, just no sign of germination.. Hmm...

Any input would be super-rad

Edit: Hylocereus polyrhizus is the obsolete binomial, Hylocereus costaricensis is the contemporary binomial.

from germany?  i got mine from there with bad results as well.  seed quality is a big one i think.

but with good seeds, surface sow in good warmth and light.  light is essential.  When i clean the fruit form my hylo to dry the seeds, i have to do it in the dark at night because if i clean during the day, the seeds start germinating WHILE im cleaning them!  i take an hour or 2 to clean all of them, so they are moist for that time.  I think how people clean their seeds also plays a role.  if they use water, as i do, and dont keep them dark, they can germ, then they get dried and the seed is dead.  that is just an assumption, cause they should store for a long time if prepp'd right.

you ould also try putting htem on a dish with a small pool of water in indirect sun for a few hours and see if that does anything.

so long as you have warmth, moisture and light they will grow fast if the seed is good...i always just throw them, literally, on the surface and they grow.

Nah, got 'em from Austraaaalia maaate.

Haha, that's crazy man! I am starting to wonder what the hell is going on, I keep thinking the seed is crap, but in all the seeds I dissected the embryo's all appeared alive, they just have not germinated for whatever reason. Which is strange, most seeds, as long as they are alive will germinate fine in any damp, warm and lit environment, the only problems generally arise post-germination..

But yeah, I started them practically how you recommended, surface sewn on rich, damp, humusy soil with lots of light (fluoro on 12/12, and about an hour of direct sunlight in the morning plus lots of indirect sun during day).

The supplier does not have these seed for sale any more, so I am assuming the batch was old and I got the dregs. Hmm...

What was the general germination window with stored seed for you?

I have more seeds from a different Aussie supplier on the way soon, hopefully this stuff will be a bit better.. I will definitely try your suggestion, but maybe on a damp paper towel, minimize the variables this time around, and transplant them once they germinate..

Cheers for the input man!

ya tissue would be great too, im just lazy cause these never gave me troubles save the imported rare species.

stored seeds i always at least see something in week 1-2 max.  most are up by week 3.  But those are seeds i cleaned and i know for sure the conditions and age etc.  when you buy seeds, you never really know.  Like grandma always says, home grown seeds are always the best quality.  aint ever an exception lol.
