Food Dehydrator
    #1372885 - 03/13/03 02:02 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

SWIM is thinking about getting a food dehydrator and had a few questions for people who already use them..

1) what brand/model do you have
2) how did you disable the heating element
3) how much can fit in it
4) how much did it cost you

SWIM is also curious as to if the dehydrator is a 1 step dying process.. do you have to still go to desidant or will the dehydtrator get it cracker dry by itself?

Food dydrators will do the trick just make sure you are using the fan and don't use heat.

Auradefect - all you have to do is toss them in there and have the fan on.

But why not just use a regular fan - helluva lot cheaper than a dehydrator

Agrees with psilo.....

If you can get a cheap second hand dehydrator, thatll be fine, just take out the heat coil and leave it up to the fan itself to dry your stuff.
A regular fan will be alot cheaper though, just get a fan, and a box, put the shrooms in the box with the fan blowing on them for a few days and that will work 100%

someone on this board once said the dehydrator works better than a fan for some reason, i am having trouble understanding this because without the heating element than all it is is a fan. what kind of fan can you fit in a box?

I use American Harvest Snackmaster food dehydrators.
The lowest setting is 95 degrees F.
There is no noticible loss of potency from using one.
And they dry the mushrooms a hell of alot faster than any other method!!

You can pick up a good food dehydrator at a second hand store.
I have found several of the American Havest models for $3.99 to $7.00 each.
These are usually in like new condition...people don't seem to use them.

The American Harvest sells for around $70.00 brand new.

Ebay might be another source if you don't have a good second hand store in your area.

good luck!

try something like this. buckets are 1.29 at the local hardware store. Screen is 75 cents a foot. and a fan, everyone has a fan. The only problem is that the holes on the side do not let enough air out, so you need to prop it up on something.

and for the final drying state, you could get a third (complete) bucket and put desicant in it.

why are you in such a hurry to get dried mushies? everyones got dried shrooms, but its the wet ones that set us(growers) apart from the rest. you should be greatful you have the opportunity to eat fresh shrooms. for many it is but a dream, worlds away. SD1

to dry them, just put them in a drawer. check back in 2-3 days. TADA dried mushies. see drying happens no matter what, so why spend money to make it happen.
