you can cultivate them on sawdust blocks. use 4 parts or so of hardwood sawdust to one part of your choice grain meal/flower (bran or riceflour work well). soak sawdust to capacity, drain, mix with bran/etc, bag and sterilize.

You can also use hardwood fuel pellets (used in wood burning stoves and available at Home Depot) that can be used instead of sawdust. You add hot water to the pellets and they will decompress into sawdust.

and from then you *could* pour a 10:1 h20:h202 solution on them, making them VERY difficult to contaminate.

Mohican and Raadt, thanks for the info! I was having trouble trying to find hardwood sawdust around my area. Luckily, there's a Home Depot about 5 minutes away. I'll have to stop in this week and check it out! -Bruiser

Use Concretefeet's substrate recipe and follow this tek for making your bags. It was the easiest tek I could find with pics to explaing how to do the bags. Just change the staw and dung to sawdust and bran. http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7983 -Bruiser

if you know a construction worker tell him to put a bag on the back of his midor saw, that will collect saw dust for ya, or just walk up on any construction sight, im 100% possitive the guys will allow you to sweep up some saw dust, both of you win.

You can buy a tray of shiitakes and start mycelium by tissue cloning the inner fleshy part of the head

The hulls from coffee beans are fiborus and absorb loads of water, theres a marginal nutrition value....it works from what I've read, but for an american it could be a little expensive because of material availability

I'm growing some shitake in a pint jar of wheat grain and bits of 'sicamore' (bad spelling) it seems to be growing ok, and the mycelium has actually grown onto the wood. Don't know if it'll fruit or not, just an experiment. I would have used sawdust, but i can't find any nearby, and I had these hard wood trees around my place so I thought i'd give it a try.

Have you started yet?As i saw you said you have oak chips?surely these are better for shiitake than other saw dusts?I would try mixing the oak chips with bran and not worrie about any other additves.Oak is what there normally grown on so use it if you got it.Try 20% bran to 80% oak chips in bags.I bet it would work fine. Good luck however you choose to go :-)
p.s some one pick this up if im wrong lol but i would use the oak.

I read some where, awhile back that any wood will work. But the thing is to use oat meal to stick it togther and form it into logs. The results can be as good as using hard woods. Im not sure about this and has any one else read this too?
