Rush help: Quantity of gypsum.. normal ?
    #13726042 - 01/03/11 05:42 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Hi, I'm actually doing my substrate mix following the ProfessorPinhead recipe.

He's saying to use 10% of gypsum per weight.

Main recipe:

60% Hpoo
40% coir

Plus add from that 100% (60+40) 10% of verm and an other 10% of gypsum.

IT MAKES A LOT

My actual mix contain:

27 liter of Hpoo
18 Liter of coir
-----------------
total : 45 liters

45 X 10% / 100 = 4.5 liter OF GYPSUM !!!!!

That's a lot..no ?

10 percent of 45 liters is 4.5 liters correct.
I'd cut that in half and add 5% percent gypsum by volume instead of the whopping 10%
5% of 45 liters is 2.25 liters.

Gypsum is very heavy, so ten percent by weight is WAY too much.  I used to recommend ten percent by volume, but I've found that 2% to 5% gypsum by volume gives the same performance.  5% gypsum by volume is roughly 2% by weight.

ah... It look more realist !

So with an amount of 45 liter, 2.5 liter of dry dust gypsum look correct ?

I'm asking just to be sure cause it makes me crazy the way they calculate WEIGHT + Volume + Quart to get a correct answer !!!!

Use only weight or volume or quart,,, but not all of them into the same formula !

Is it only me that become lost with that kind of calculation ????

2.5 liters of gypsum is 5% of gypsum by volume of 45 liters like I stated above.
Just measure out 2.5 liters of powderized gypsum in a measuring cup and add it to your dry substrate materials.
Add your gypsum to your materials before bringing them to field capacity and pasteurizing them.
