Two quick questions regarding edibles. "fastest growing" and best in garden?

Hey people. I have a couple quick questions regarding edibles. *What in your opinion is the fastest growing edible? That could be grown indoors/outdoors? *I have a small little garden area outside my front door. I would love to grow a mix of edible flowers, some other cool plants, and mix in some edible mushrooms as well. What mushrooms should I think about for this?
Thanks a bundle!

Fastest growing are oysters by far. Pleurotus genus. There are several options for outdoor beds, as well as tree stumps. You could make a bed out of woodchips and other wood debris, and grow King stropharia or King oysters. Also, if you want your mushrooms to grow amongst your plants in rich, composted soil, consider Shaggy manes or Agaricus sp. On the other hand, if you don't want to make large beds, and can get a hardwood log ~10 inches in diameter and ~20 inches long, you can grow oysters, black poplar, shiitake, lion's mane etc. depending on your preference. All of those are relatively easy to grow, and to get in the form of dowels or spawn. I would suggest making both a small bed andplanting a stump, for variety. Possibilities are endless, read a bit about these species and try to decide which would be best for your taste!

thx Tangich for the advice! I'll check out what you recommended. Right now theres some crappy soil in the planter with a few mixed random plants. I want to replace all the soil etc. Shaggy manes sounds like a fun option. It would just be so cool to see mushrooms growing amongst some edible flowers etc.

No problem! I forgot to mention Agaricus, Agaricus blazei is a very good edible and extremely medicinal, it also grows on compost. Shaggys are easier to grow, but they will spread like wildfire, you won't be able to get rid of them in a year or two! Read a bit here about different edible species, you'll be able to get a general idea of their taste and cultivation parameters. http://www.shroomery.org/8533/Cultivation-Parameters

If you are hungry for information I would suggest picking up the book Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms by Paul Stamets. It is worth its weight on gold. Mycelium Running is another title by Paul Stamets that I recommend.

12 gauge? JK. Hot pepper flakes work w/ birdseed. Might work on mushrooms as well. Or a deterrent mat. A rubber mat w hard spikes that are uncomfortable for lil critters to walk on. Or feed em in an area away from the garden.

It's funny I thought critters would be a big problem for me. I put a big 'mini geenhouse' on my back porch and as long as my stuff is in there the critters don't mess with it. If the bags are otherwise on my porch they tear them apart. Your mileage may vary.

The Blue Oyster sporeworks sells is crossed with rocket fuel, I highly recommend it for one the first edibles you work with. I just pulled out a tube of it that has been in the fridge for about 2 years, put a piece of the mycelium on an agar plate and had new growth and immediate pinning within 4 days. If that isn't good performance I don't know what is.

Sounds like a good way to begin. Usually a good way to begin with shitakes is with dowel plugs for logs.
