remove vermiculite layer?
    #1369706 - 03/12/03 04:11 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

when putting the cakes in the terrarium, is it neccesary to remove the verm layer that is on top? and which way should the cake sit, with the verm layer on top the way it sat in the jar, or with the verm on the bottom (upside down from how it was in the jar)? the verm layer has been left on so far, and they have been in there two days and they've showed no signs of pinning yet

It isn't necessary and most people leave it for it is good at absorbing water.

it will take a week or more to see pins. dont be so quick to point the finger at the verm layer. the real problem lies within you. lack of patience I believe. just think about it.

If you want to get the most of your cakes you should remove the top vermiculite layer and dunk the cakes then put moist vermiculite on both ends of the cake.

and make sure you are fanning! BTW it doesn't matter what way the cake is sitting, and last but not least leave that verm alone! It will act as a mini casing layer, Holding water, enabling bigger and better flushes. (after your first flush soak that verm layer with a spray bottle)
