Dick cop ruined my Christmas
#13695726 - 12/28/10 12:06 PM (13 years, 4 months ago) |
|
|
So being that all my roommates are from California and so am I, we wouldn't be able to see our relatives for the holidays due to work. We decided to take a trip to snowboard on Christmas day. My car was acting funny so I decided to rent one for the trip.
I was up by 2:00 am, to leave by 4am so we could get to the mountain right when they open (its about a 4 hour trip). So driving on about 2 hours of sleep probably wasn't the smartest thing. By the 3 hour mark I was getting pretty tired, and the roads were icier since we were going north. Being that my boyfriend is a lot better driver than I am, I gave him the wheel, trying to do the safer thing.
Needless to say, we get pulled over. He asks us who's car it is, and I told him it was a rental, gave him all the paperwork in the glove box. I apologized, and told him that it was my fault and that I was trying to prevent an accident from happening. Told him we are far from home trying to have a nice trip. I could take over driving if needed to.
The problem was, the car rental was only under my name, and my boyfriend had a suspended license. I understand that he shouldn't have been driving but would you rather die from me falling asleep at the wheel or have someone (who drives better than I do) take over for a little bit?
Well, the cop impounded the car. We were stranded and full of snowboard gear with no one to pick us up. One of our buddies ended up hitchhiking to the mountain while we waited for a friend to pick us up....
So we didn't even get to go, and now I owe enterprise over $700 in impound and towing fees for a trip I didn't even get to make.
Yeah, merry fucking Christmas, right?

Fuck that shit, I would fight back, especially if something this shitty happened. I would start off by telling them I was trying to prevent an accident.

That's the only up side is maybe if I didn't let him drive we would be dead. But shit, it was fucking christmas? He couldn't just give my boyfriend a ticket and let me take over? I asked him and he said "Nope, it's too late, the tow truck driver is already on his way" He was trying to be a dick and ruin our day.

So, you violated the rental agreement. Your BF violated state law. You, knowing he had no license, let him drive?
And that somehow makes the cop a dick? For doing his job?

You brought your misery upon yourself.

Why was someone with a suspended license driving the rental car? That's on you, next time pull over and get some sleep. Take some responsibility instead of blaming the cop.

I was trying to do the safer thing, jackass. I know I was in the wrong for that part but he has such little heart like the fucking Grinch that he had to do the worst.
I mean it was fucking Christmas, hundreds on miles away from home. We had the car full of gear, and weren't really doing anything wrong.

It would've brought more misery upon the driver and her BF, along with their families if she kept driving knowing that her drowsiness is gonna be the cause of their demise.

So you doing the wrong thing/s, makes ME a jackass?
He was doing his job. That's exactly what he was supposed to do.
It doesn't matter what day it was. The law doesn't get suspended on Christmas, or any other day. The law is not dependent on your distance from home, nor upon the fact that your car was loaded with gear.
I can hear the cop now... "Well, you're violating the rental agreement and you're also letting someone drive who has a suspended license... but since you're so far from home and you have all this gear in your car, I'm gonna let you go. Be forewarned however... if you had one less snowboard in your car I'd throw you all in the slammer!"
Not doing anything wrong?
I guess you mean not doing anything wrong except: 1. Allowing someone not on the rental agreement to drive. 2. Letting a person drive the car with no license, with your knowledge.
Yup... I'm a jackass alright!

But, but, but... it was Christmas.
Surely liability would be waived because it was Christmas and they were loaded down with gear hundreds of miles from home!
And she was tired!

Are you serious? Those two things are not even close to related.
Illegal drugs: victimless crime
Driving with a suspended license: the state sees you (don't know why, you happened to conveniently leave that out) as unsafe to drive. You are driving a several ton death machine that can easily kill someone.
You brought this on yourself man, that was a dumb move. Sucks it happened so far from home, but you really shouldn't have done that.

I used to drive without a license all the time, and I still drive drunk and do tons of other illegal shit that put others at harm. I know I'm wrong, but I really don't have respect for authority so I don't care. However, when I get caught I know I'm in the wrong and I don't complain about it.

It has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with respect for authority, it has to do with respect for other people's lives. That's disgusting, and you're a huge asshole and piece of shit for doing that. I don't care about how many drugs you use or other victimless crimes, but driving drunk is just immature and stupid. Please stop putting people's lives at risk.

I drove several years while high on xanax and methadone, driving drunk really isn't that hard for me. I only drive on back roads, at the speed limit of usually less than 35 mph and I'm very careful. I don't like doing it, but sometimes I don't really have any options other than sleeping in my car. Its not a good idea, but I'm confident in my drunk driving ability, and I haven't met very many people that are over 21 that haven't drove drunk on occasion.

No, there is such thing as violating several laws and putting people in danger because the person driving is seen as an unsafe driver in the view of the state.
That was a cop doing his job, not overzealously either. From reading the story in OP it sounds like standard operating procedure to me.

if the cop did this when the OP was in danger and the driver was going ot the hospital or something, then yes he's a dick. But, otherwise, no he has his reasons and was perfectly in line. If you can't be bothered to pull over and take a break for everyone elses safety, then fuck you too

i can't believe how many people are siding with the cop on this one.
i mean i'm all about upholding the law for the most part, but what the fuck kind of asshole leaves a couple stranded on a mountain on christmas just because the girl was tired and let her bf drive even tho his license was suspended?
i understand it's the LAW, but there's always gonna be circumstances where the law actually isn't the safest way to go about a situation.

typically your license is suspended for a reason due to safety. So, you're letting an unsafe driver operate a vehicle because you were more concerned with getting to the slopes the instant they open than others safety. Fuck that.
And, just because this is a forum of drug users, does not mean we are not responsible. What you do to your own body is your issue, endangering others is another

I don't love our government, it has to change a good # of things before I love it, but protecting others is something I approve of.
View it from his point of view. Technically it is unlawful to drive while tired, she let someone who has a suspended license drive a vehicle he could not legally drive for two reasons, her excuse was that she wanted to get to snowboard/ski/whatever and that was the reason for endangering others. I can almost guarantee if it were something like "yeah, my bone is sticking out my arm" or something like that the cop woulda said switch drivers and behave.
Plus, cops typically don't pull you over for no reason so he probably made a driving error worthy of being pulled over (remember the unsafe to drive part?)

The cop also had a duty to protect the property of the rental company.
Every improper act in this thread was perpetrated by people who are not police. Sorry but y'all need to grow up.

Holy shit. I understand everyone's points of view, but I do not understand why everyone is being so fucking hard on the OP. First of all, the ultimate "job" of police is to PROTECT the people, (which is a complete fucking joke, but it's what their "job" is meant to be.) Their job isn't supposed to be doing whatever they can to completely fuck someone over, but that is besides the point. OP may have brought it on herself, but the situation with the cop was all ego. The way I see it from a perspective of a real human being is: for some people, there are times when treating someone like a real human being and having consideration for another person's predicament can take precedence over "doing their job", especially when "doing their job" means being absolutely fucking heartless and treating someone like a piece of shit as a part of their own power trip. Either way, the OP obviously went through a shitty enough situation, no one on this message board needs to make it worse by ripping her to shreds on this thread. Even if you're completely on the cop's side... have a little compassion, no one is perfect, everyone has made mistakes and been through shit with cops or other people in their lives and may not have dealt with it perfectly. It's certainly not anyone's place to judge her, just give her a break. This board needs so much more love, and so does the world, and so do cops.

First off, paragraphs please, that shit is annoying as fuck to read.
Secondly, in this case the police was protecting people - the other people on the road. I don't understand how this is getting through some of your heads, but I'll say it again: when someone has a suspended license, it's because THEY ARE UNSAFE OR IRRESPONSIBLE DRIVERS.
So, whoever was driving is already deemed unsafe to be driving, and he was driving a car that even if he had a license he had no right to be driving, due to the ToS of the rental agreement, which OP signed.
Now, the cop pulled them over FOR A REASON - something the OP is leaving out went down, something that the cop deemed reason to pull them over (perhaps reckless driving?).
Being too tired to drive is considered impairment, and you can a ticket for reckless endangerment or something of the sort for this fact alone.
The OP and her friends made so many poor decisions, that as much as it sucks, the cop did the right thing. He is protecting the property of the car rental company, as well as the other drivers on the road.
Even if he had said to switch drivers, the OP herself already said she was in no state to be driving anyways, so how would that have helped the situation?
Holy fuck, some of you guys are just so against cops 100% of the time you don't even look at the facts and just assume the cops were in the wrong.
I don't like cops any more than the next guy, but in this particular situation, the cop was completely right, and did the right thing to protect everyone - the other people on the road, the rental car company, and even the people in the car which got towed.
Next time OP will probably make safer decisions about driving. That's part of the reason why they do this, because if she just got a slap on the wrist I guarantee this same shit would go down sometime down the road, and maybe that time somebody would get hurt.

yeahhhh no. I'm an EMT firefighter and do you have any idea how many accidents I've seen from sleep deprivation, drunks, etc? I also find a lot of the really stupid or bad ones are from people who don't have licenses, I wonder why?
I don't care if someone smashes themselves to bits, keeps me in business, but fuck you if you're going to endanger someone else. Nothing about an ego trip here. The cop was protecting someone else's very expensive property (rental car), keeping other drivers safe and protecting his job. If the OP had her boyfriend get into an accident, even if he weren't at fault, and the cop had previously pulled them over and known he was driving, there goes his job. Shit, even if they swapped drivers he could still lose his job, and don't for a moment think the insurance company wouldn't find out. Every time a car is pulled over the police have to announce the plates, DL, and in some jurisdictions or if there is any thought that it might not be legit, registration. IT'S DOCUMENTED. He did them a favor by not arresting the boyfriend and in some states they can arrest the person who allowed the non licensed driver to operate a vehicle.
There is reason to explain to the OP why the fuck you don't do things like that, for their safety, convenience, and others safety and so others can take it as a warning as to NOT do what she did.

This isnt true. When i was 19 i had my license suspended for 3 months due to multiple underage drinking citations. I wasnt behind the wheel or even in a car when i got these citations. The laws are similar in many places, and for 3 months i couldnt drive but not because i was an unsafe driver. Hop off your high horse.
To the Op, shitty luck. But ive been in your shoes many times. You took a risk and it burned ya. Sucks it was on Christmas.
Every encounter with the law results with money out of your pocket. You should try to avoid those encounters.

Well that is the most fucked up thing I've ever heard.
Sorry I don't live in the US, Canada does not have laws this backwards.
Either way, when you have a suspended license, you don't drive.
They just passed laws in Ontario that under 22 can't have ANY drinks before driving.
I obviously am not intoxicated after 1 drink, but I'm 21, and I don't drive after drinking at all anymore because I don't want to catch a ton of shit like OP did.

OP is venting about the police doing their job, and this man pointing out why they were utterly, and completely in the wrong is being a dick?
It sucks to have it happen on Christmas, but if you don't have a license you can't drive, whatever the reason is.

If you get DUI on a bicycle you lose your car license
One of the best ways to prevent drink driving, riding a push bike home, is criminalized.

OP it sucks that you took these risks and it didn't work out for you. Although it still could have been worse either way you acted. You wouldn't get so much shit from people if you weren't placing the blame on the cop for ruining your christmas. Everything that happened to you was a result of your own poor decision making. In a situation like yours all you can do is realize what you did wrong, learn not to make the same mistakes, deal with your fines, and move on.

i agree though. RP should have pulled over and slept for an hour.
It really isn't. If I get pulled over and get a DUI I wouldn't bitch about it for a second. People can comment all they want to, but I've driven fucked up on drugs I was prescribed over several thousand times, over 10k miles and I didn't get into any accidents that were my fault. It slows your reaction time, as does talking on a phone while driving or fucking around with the radio, or driving while high on marijuana, or while stressed out. You shouldn't do any of those things, but people still do it and until I actually get into an accident while intoxicated I'm not actually putting anyone at risk. This might come as a shock to some people, but you do get a lot better at functioning while intoxicated over time. Me driving drunk is not the same as some jackass 21 year old that can't hold his liquor for shit or drive worth a damn. I have alcoholic friends that are drunk 24/7 that have driven for over 20 years daily without 1 accident, not to say its smart or safe but driving drunk isn't the same for everyone. I also text message and drive at the same time, which is probably a lot more dangerous than driving drunk. I really should stop doing that though, but I'm lazy.

To the op: 1. What were you pulled over for? 2. What did you, your bf, and whoever else was in the car look like? Skaters, piercings, tattoos, anything like that? 3. Were you at all rude to the cop in any way? Did your bf, or anyone else give the cop that fuck you vibe? 4. Were you whining to the cop? Acting bitchy?
If you answered yes to 3 and 4, you know why.
If the answer to 1 was a good reason to get pulled over, you know why. It doesn't sound like you got a moving violation.
If the answer to 2 was yes to any of it, that just adds to the mess.
If you escaped my questionnaire clean, then you shouldn't waste your time worrying.
You probably aren't aware of this, but impounding cars is a racket for a lot of small cities. Cops are also pressured to make minimum amounts of citations.
