Pine Tree Identification

I'm finding it hard to see the features to key it out for you. I have a feeling it isn't of the genus Pinus but I can't be sure.

Here's a link to a key for Pinaceae that grow in California. You may have better luck keying it out than I'm having>>> link

I really can't discern by the pictures. And unfortunately I'm not very familiar with trees in your area. Check the needle amount per cluster, after you know that it should really narrow it down. Also, how big is the pine cone?

Finally got back to the tree today, there are two needles per cluster (I checked more then one cluster to be sure) and the cones are about 3-4 inches long.

Doesn't key out to anything on that key, so you could be right that its not a pine, other then that though, I don't know.

The more I read up on Pinaceae, the more I think it is indeed Pinus, but I'm not quite sure which one. The two local species with two needles per cluster are P. contorta and P. muricata, but the bark and cones don't match for both. Perhaps a non-native species?

According to tree guide I was given today (The Sibley Guide To Trees), larch should have small and upright cones? The needles for the species it lists don't really look close at all to what this tree has either. :shrug:

P. albicaulis has 5 needles per cluster, this has 2, thanks anyways though. :smile:

Not a California native pine species. Certainly in Pinus however.

I should know I live in Carmichael. Went to pull the car into the garage once, and there was a guy snapping photos of my Liquidambar (sp?) it drops those little spikey balls. Anyway, it turns a really nice color in the fall. You should go over to American River College and check out their False Monkey Tree. It drops 20+ pound cones :shocked:

Harvesting it for seed is a bitch. I have some books you could flip though, but I don't have any specific to pine trees. Cool tree.
