I have a question. I was using an aquarium heater to incubate. Well the heater glass shell cracked and broke off exposing the heating coils. The thing still works. Do you think this is a SAFE alternative? Just keeping the heater in a glass with no water and letting the coils do their job???

I would unplug that thing and throw it away (after its cooled).

Do you still have the receipt? Even if you don't, you may be able to exchange it for another. This happened to a guy I know, and he told the person at the store that he had tapped it on the edge of the aquarium, resulting in the breakage. It's worth a try even w/out a receipt.

Dude, those coils are hot AND electrified. If you touch the coils and are grounded, you'll get burned and shocked. As long as the current does not take the path of least resistance through your heart, you'll just have a painful memory of what being branded with 110 volts feels like.

what a piece of crap, i don't want the damn aquarium heater thing anymore. i don't want to buy a heating pad either. will a heat lamp wrapped in foil really suffice? I don't want to tend to this thing, that's why I liked the aqaurium heater because it was automatic.

Why dont you want to buy a heating pad? You cant rule out the most obvious, easy solutions, and then bitch about your predicament. You have no predicament. Buy a heating pad, problem solved.

I wouldn't use a heating pad since there is no way to regulate the heat. The submersible aquarium heater is the way to go. Try to take it back.

Now I understand. I was at the pet store today, looking at aquarium heaters, thinking, "What the hell? This thing has to be in water, doesn't it?!" I guess that answered that question. Do you just stick it in a cup of water inside the terrarium or what?

You can stick it in a jar w/ water and peroxide covered in foil or you can do this:

Get two containers, fill one with water, put the heater in it. Place the other container in the first one, use some cups to keep it from resting on the heater. Add water regularly..

to circulate the warm water all around the bottom container so it's not just concentrated in one area. you really don't need it but slight modifications can't hurt.

Not needed but it does help the incubator heat up faster and heat up a little more evenly so that the incubator isn't hotter at the bottom then the top.

Bob, if you are using the heater in a jar method, then you don't need a submersible. right ?
i just saw two of them at a second hand store for 2$ each .
i bought a Thrifty brand cool spray humidifier for 1$

the same thing happend to me once, but i didnt know it broke at the time (bad lighting) and when i reached for it to adjust it, my fingers grabbed the coils. It shocked me pretty good, i didnt even know what was happening at first, it wasnt too bad though. i replaced it pretty quick after that

I too find aquarium heaters confusing. Heating pads are easy. You just put enough layers of towels between the heating pad and tub. I can regulate the temp pretty easy this way. SD1

There is a way to regulate the temp. Put a regular house thermostat in with your jars and/or cakes (put it in a bag) set the temp and run the heater through it. (can also control lights/humidifier/bubbler/whatever as temp varies.
