Some Little Known Strains
    #1368996 - 03/12/03 12:11 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I ran across the website for Florida Mycology Research Center (FMRC) and they have some cubensis strains which I am not familiar with and have read nothing or next to nothing about. Since the search function isn't working at this time, any information (relative potency, growth parameters, etc.) on the following would be appreciated...

Polar, described as 40-50 F temp (this I find the most intriguing, perhaps it can be grown without incubation)

Brillo Nuevo (from Peru?)

Cuba

Columbia (I've seen the name before but that's about it)

Well Cubensis's prefix comes from Cuba, I believe. Would make sense there is a strain from there.. As to the other ones no clue, would like to know myself also though.

I seem to recall hearing somthing about the columbians. (I could be wrong)
From what I remember they were some ultra fast colonizers and the shrooms had real skinny stalks so that when they grow they fall all over each other, and your flush looks like a bowl of spegetti. I think T.H.E had some a while back (Again I could be wrong.)

Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

Dude socrates you are WRONG! Grouch is right. The Cubensis name does come from the fact that the guy (some guy named Earle) first found a specimin in cuba and recognized it as a new species.
The name psilocybe comes from greek meaning "bald head"

cubensis literally means "cubic" in greek it may have been intended to mean coming from cuba.. but its doubtful.

"Discovered by F.S. Earle in Cuba in 1904 (as Stropharia cubensis)"

I don't know if it's right, but it's there.

By Polar, I'd guess it would be a Ps. cyanescens or Ps. azurescens...and not a Ps. cubensis "strain". All cubensis are a like in that they will only fruit in a certain temperature zone.

It would be ineresting if they actually cloned a strain which would be easily fruited in the cooler climates...

You may be right but according to their web site it is a Psilocybe Cubensis, that's why I'm interested in getting more information about it.

I'm right, I just checked in my TMC book  Species was first found in cuba when it was labeled.

This thread is a bit old, but has anyone found any info on that polar strain yet? I did some poking around on the FMRC webpage and couldn't find anything.

Stephen Peele (of the FMRC) sent this to me by email about the polar strain:

Quote:

...it was a strain that I developed years ago. Simply over a period
of about two years, slowly started to drop temps and isolate any
surviving strains. The original strain I started with was isolated in
December during cold weather. The spores offered today don't work as
good as the original strain sold years ago. This is because it has been
maintained over the entire years in outside wild beds............slp/fmrc

Spores from this strain are for sale but can only be ordered by "bonafide legal researchers" and must be made on official letterhead.
