should the dry layer of vermiculite be sterilized or is this an unnesecarry precaution? it is feasible that some contaminants could have been in the dry vermiculite, am I screwed if there were or would the steam sterilization kill the junk? thanks

My friend assumes that you are talking about the PF tek. Sterilizing the verm before loading into the jars is unnecessary. Anything that might be in the verm (unlikely) will be taken care of by the boiling/PCing.

Like dog said, there's no point in sterilizing anything before putting the ingredients into the jar because the pressure cooker will sterilize everything in the jar.

well the brf/verm mix was sterilized via microwave before steam sterilization. guess t was just a waste of time. about the brf/verm mix, it was sticky, but no so much that it poured all that well. kinda had to push it into the third jar I did. was this too dry? I mean, it was sticky/wet to the touch, but maybe not enough..
