fluffy growth
    #1368375 - 03/12/03 06:35 AM (20 years, 11 months ago)

afof pet noticed that he got fluffy mycelium growth overnight in the fruiting chamber

He keeps the temperature at the temp of his house which is around 71 degrees, he doesnt have anything to tell the humitity, but the sides of the chamber are covered with condinsation and some water droplets are forming near the top, he used aboot 1.75 inches of perlite and around a .5 inch of water to humidify it. last he sets it on the floor by a window for aboot 4 hours for natural sunlight, which he said only brings the temperature up 2 or 3 degrees at the most, why would this be happing, he said that the fluffy growth was only like an 1/8 of an inch wide strip running from the top of the cake to the bottom

Are your cakes being exposed to the sunlight directly?

The fluffy growth is normal. Fan a couple times per day and you should see pins soon.

yea i guess it would be directly he leaves it on the floor where the sunlight hits it thru the window, he has 1 cap and that started 3 days ago, no other pins formed

It is the mycelium still in colonization mode. It is normal, and your cakes will fruit soon. Too high humidity will cause this to happen for like 2 weeks and your cakes will eventually be a big fluffball when they start to pin. But either way, it is a normal part of the colinization process and is harmless. The only downside is that it might take a little longer to see pins. Just fan more often, and let the perlite dry up a little bit before adding any more water. You'll be fine. SD1

I don't think myc likes direct sunlight. If there's any way to angle your terrarium so the cakes aren't getting the direct light, that might work better for you.

Yea, get a flourescent nite-lite, attach it to an extention cord, and put it on the top the fruiting chamber. Best method if you ask me. SD1
