Pretty much, yes. The chances you'll find cubensis in califorina are probably 1 in 10,0000. Look for stunzii in the fall if you're in the north, Panaeolus elsewhere.

Do a search here in the forums. I have posted some good pictures of what you can expect to find in Nor Cal.
If your in Napa, you'll be in the area to find Psilocybe stunzii, Panaeolus subbalteatus (your best bet), and even Psilocybe cyanescens.
Stunzii will grow in very well taken care grass, like commercial building lawns, during the fall and winter. Panaeolus subbalteatus will grow from horse manure...try to find a semi-public horse stable and check the dung pile in the back... Psilocybe cyanescens might be a little tougher as they will grow in hardwood mulch around gardens and whatnot.
Do a search for any of those species in the hunting forum here and you'll find some good pictures. Also check out google.com and go to images and enter in the species names stated above.
You are a little late for the season I hate to say, but, start looking after this nice rain we had for some edibles...!

You might try looking in ANY field or open plots of land . Even if its surrounded by other buildings. If there is an old decaying tree stump or someone has dumped tree cuttings in or around the pile or just around the base of the tree stump where the roots begin to decay is a great place for mycelium to flourish near these i have found good results.

my friend lives an hour west of Tahoe. but in the summer he says it gets pretty warm. he's thinking of sporing up his friend's cow pasture and hosing it down every once in awhile just for fun. he'll probably have little success... but it's worth a try

You'd have better luck sporing up a horse with Panaeolus subbalteatus spores.

Yeah, I live in that general area.
The rains we are expecting in the next few days are promising.
There has been a lot of fog, which creates high humidity, and great conditions for some mushrooms to start popping up.
Im going to check a few spots for some chantrelles, maybe some springtime amanitas, and I'll check my subbalteatus manure heap too!

hehe, nice sentence.
Well, there will be mushrooms growing in a lot of different areas. Not in the abundance that we would see during the winter months, but, still some nice fungi.
Like I said in my post above, there will be Chantrelles...which are excellent eating fungi which will be growing in madrone/oak leaf litter (humus). Ive been noticing that they have been 1-5 inches under the thick humus this year. Im not sure what causes this.
The springtime amanita (Amanita velosa) will be popping up here as well, if it hasn't already. Unfortuently, to the untrained eye, it will resemble many other Amanita's, which most of are highly toxic. So, its not the best mushroom for starters.
If you're just into hallucinogenic mushrooms, MJ has stated that there is usually a springtime fruiting of Panaeolus subbalteatus. This will be growing from horse dung and rotting hay stacks. Its best to check out a horse stable manure pile.
There will be various other fungi which you will be able to come across as well...
