Looking to get on usenet
#13662641 - 12/20/10 08:29 PM (13 years, 3 months ago) |

and I have no idea how to use it. I need to download some songs and I'm uneasy about using bittorrent as I got a letter from my ISP about downloading some movies before. I read that usenet is possibly safer, but I'm not sure where to start. Can anybody recommend a good newsgroup to subscribe to? And possibly a link to a good tutorial?
I also have a rapidshare account from a couple months back but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

Im very green when it comes to this. I tried it a couple times and never quite figured it out... until recently.
Now I do use it regularly. I use NZBsRus and NZBMatrix to find 'nzb' files (like torrent files). I use Alt Binz to read those nzb files and start the download (like uTorrent). I have service through Newshosting, I put that information into Alt Binz.
Good luck and have fun. If you find any better NZB sites, let me know.

What is transport encryption? I heard the best way to avoid detection is to use private trackers, but I don't know much about them. It sounds like they're private sites that are hard to become a member of.
I actually got several letters, one when I was living at my parents house for downloading movies, three times in my first place for downloading movies, and once at another of my places for downloading a game.
The three that I got were actually one right after the other and I found out about them all at once. Each letter was for a different movie and I downloaded those three movies in a time period of about 4 days, so by the time I found out about the first offense I already racked up the other offences. They shut my internet off, but I was able to talk them into turning it back on since there was no way I could have known about the earlier strikes until I got all three. The letters said I was caught by some private internet watchdog group that just sits around busting people downloading shit and then sending letters to ISPs. I feel like I'm on a list or something since I've gotten so many letters in one time period.

So how much will that all cost me?
I don't really care much for downloading music anymore - I'm quite willing to pay for what I want, but I'm buying a karaoke machine as a gift and I wanted to download a shitload of the special CDG's that they use. I have no other use for those files and I don't care for the pop-shit music that will be on them, so I'd rather just get that for free.

Thanks, so what I gather is that using transport encryption prevents your ISP from seeing that the data coming through is from a bit torrent service; however, it doesn't change the fact that other bit torrent users can still see that your ip address is downloading the material. Those other bit torrent users could be the MPAA, RIAA, or that fucking watchdog group that nabbed me. So it seems like transport encryption does more in the lines of preventing your ISP from throttling your download speed when using bit torrent as opposed to actually increasing your security and reducing the chance of getting caught.

That's very reasonable, but I was looking on those NZB search sites you mentioned and I couldn't really find any of the types of files I was looking to download, so I guess it wouldn't work for me. And from what I can see, it's too difficult to get into a good private tracker, particularly for this short time frame I'm working with. I may just need to download from isohunt. I coulnd't find any rapidshare links either.

Im wanting to get into usenet one of these days too. A lot of torrents supposedly originate from there. And the download speed is supposed to be crazy good.
A lot of people seem to like Giganews, they're quality but you pay for it. Astraweb is a little cheaper, I was looking into them.

so one thing i'm a little unsure about, you cant actually search for .nzb files on giganews? you need a separate search engine that finds the files and then you download them from a newsgroup like giganews?

Download a newsreader. Its an actual program that runs within your OS, like a bit-torrent client. The news services you pay for access, and to retain all the junk you get on their servers. The more retention, the most it costs. There's usually an unlimited option for whatever price. Then the actual newsgroups where you'll get stuff from, you find yourself with the reader.
I think that's basically how it works.
Quote:
Newsreaders for windows
Newsleecher | Grabit Alt.binz | Newsbin Pro | Forte Agent | BinaryBoy| Newsrover| | Newsreactor | Ultraleecher | Usenetexplorer | Tamava | Ozum | Xnews|.
Newsreaders for Linux
Hellanzb | Pan | BNR2 | Klibido | Ninan | Tamava | Urdland
Newsreaders for the macintosh
Unison | Hogwasher | Nzbdrop | OSXnews | igrab news
And I think these lists are in order of most popular and/or most used, not sure.

Does your ISP still provide Usenet access? Mine used to but the last time I tried to connect to Usenet they discontinued it. Once you download a Usenet application it's just a matter of figuring out the server name if your ISP has one. It's usually something like: news.abc.xyz.com
If there is no local server you'll have to pay for giganews.

I did a search and it looks like my ISP does have a news server and I found a post in a forum talking about downloading binaries from it. When I get home I'll download one of those news readers and try out the web address.

So I downloaded alt.binz and connected to the newsgroup through my ISP. I used NZBclub to find some .nzbs. It seemed to be the best site I came across as it actually had a great collection of NZB's and I was able to download them directly as NZB files without having to pay for anything. The file I downloaded was only 1 day old and I'd imagine I'd have to pay for any old files, but shit, that file flew in at 700 kbps. I've downloaded files in the +1 MBps speed before, but never from a torrent site, so I'm pretty impressed. I might consider paying for a premier account on one of those NZB search sites.

i use revtt too, and as far as people actually seeding and getting good download speeds, it is great, but i still infinitely prefer usenet and think it's entirely worth the $11/mo i pay for an astraweb account.

Would astraweb's 180GB plan for $25 be any good? 180GB is probably greater than all the combined torrents I've ever downloaded.
Can you start and stop the monthly payments? Like pay for a few months, and take a break if needed? Or is there a minimum amount you have to commit to?

yah, you can unsubscribe from astraweb, though it's kindah annoying since there's no 1 click unsubscribe button, you have to open a support ticket and message them to cancel your account....
the 180gb plan seems ok to me, it offers the ulimited speeds... and might take you farther than what you'd pay monthly, depending on your personal needs...

well you have a better ISP than I do, and wouldn't doubt that you do on some torrents, but certainly not all... and keeping a good ratio on revtt is no easy task for a lot of things, when there is nobody out there downloading what you're seeding..... my point is that through usenet i get my max bandwith consistently every time, without worrying about ratios, for what I personally consider a very low and worthwhile cost.

i'd say it depends on what you're downloading from revtt, on the bright side to be an authorized uploader w/ revtt, you have to at least have 10mbps u/l bandwith (1MB/sec), which helps.... but what happens when you download something w/ 1 seeder? that means they have to have at least 30mbps of their u/l bandwith to devote to you in order to get your speed. and what happens when the vast majority of things you want have few seeders and no leechers? try maintaining your ratio then. i can spend more money in revtt donations to get ratio credits than i do on usenet, simply because i'm not interested in the latest tv shows yadda.

i just leave things to seed for a month or two..
once you build up a buffer you dont really need to worry about ratios anymore. its all about getting over that initial ratio building period with private trackers.

i have a 2.668 ratio w/ revtt... it's still a pain in the ass though, and i don't foresee ever getting the buffer to be able to do what i do with usenet.... $11/mo to download as much as i want, whenever i want, and as fast as i want, just seems worth it....occasionally though, i find some rare score on revtt, so it's definitely worth having around... i do like the site, just don't consider it a replacement for usenet, and would definitely recommend the OP trying it.

i do recommend usenet to those who don't have a fast home connection/can't get one, to those who are to big of noobs to figure out seeding, and for a persons first few months of getting into downloading so you can grab releases w/ few seeders, but for the last group, once you get all the old releases, torrents for me are the best way to get new releases.

oh man.. you arent on the right sites. haha..
i usually average about 2.5Mbps down through BT. at best ive gotten only half that through usenet..
Well since then I figured out that I only had one thread enabled and that I could enable multiple threads. I've been able to get up to 1 Mbps but that's been about it. I only opened five threads but it gets to a point of diminishing returns where each thread goes a little slower. I also figured out that my ISP only has a retention of about 30 days for binaries. After that I gotta pay for a premier service. I bought a block of bandwidth from usenet-news.net. They were pretty cheap and the bandwidth doesn't expire. Any files posted less than 30 days ago I can get free through my ISP. I've been searching for nzbs through binsearch.info. I've found more of what I'm looking for there than any other site.
So one lingering question I have about this is the safey of using my ISP's newsgroup as opposed to a premier service. Do you think they watch the content being downloaded from their newsgroup as opposed to a service you'd pay for?

There's nothing like usenet. Giganews + Grabit + nzbindex.nl or merlins-portal.net gets you all you need at top speeds and anonymity.

Newsgroups are great, but I find that they are not able to completely supplant my torrent usage. I frequently use my private trackers to find things that I simply cannot find in the newsgroups.

What private tracker are you with?

The ones I use are what.cd, bitmetv, bitme and bitgamer. I find that the torrents are much better for getting older stuff than the newsgroups.
