About covering your casing....
    #1366210 - 03/11/03 02:22 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

When I read casing teks they tend to say you should case your colonized rye/grain and cover it with aluminum foil while incubating. Wouldn't it be better to cover it with plastic wrap so you could check the progress without opening it and exposing the casing to contams? My friend's dog has lost a few casings to mold (mostly cobweb) during this incubation stage and he thinks it is because he has to lift the foil with his paw to check on it. He used h2O2 when the mold formed, but it kept coming back. Any ideas?

I use clingfilm to cover my casings in incubation, and yes, it means you can see it, it works for me. You should poke a *couple* of holes in it as well.

You definitely can use saran wrap as long as you are incubating it in darkness. The few minutes you check on your casing in the daylight isn't going to hurt it. When you are done just toss it back into the incubation chamber.

foil is recommended over clingfilm for 2 reasons. 1) it blocks light much better and 2) it breathes, which is necessary to prevent cobweb (IME). Clingfilm can be used as long as you 1)minimize exposure to light and 2)leave some manner of breathing, be it holes or loose sides. The one timesI used tightly sealed clingfilm I got nailed with bacteria. I would have said it was due to my own insterile technique but i just happened to run out of clingfilm and did the others with foil and the foilwrapped ones worked like champs.

interesting.......so breathing is key. This then leaves the debate at the number of holes.....is "a *couple*" enough?

When incubating, holes aren't as important. Usually, saran breathes enough by itself while at the same time retaining moisture.

actually it depends on the film. glad breathes, i hear saran doesn't. the crap i used most certainly did not. it was dollar store stuff (hey, dollar stores are the best for foil, bins, lysol, bleach, rags, tape, etc.). for the same price you can get foil.

Just make 3 or 4 very small holes in it just ot be sure, I mean, we dont know what sort of film you'll be using so I'd do it to be on the same side.  Sure holes MAY not be necessary but I'd rather have a couple holes in it than bacteria.

Yeah, on the safe side you could poke some holes or just drill holes in the side of the casing and use some form of filter media (do this before you case!).
