green mold spores create green mold. higher humidity speeds the rate at which they can reporduce and colonize.

I did also notice this...I have since switched from straight tap water to h2o2.h20 mix for misting and my terrarium and next time I will be using distilled h20 for my cakes. I hope it will take care of the problem. The green mold I have found is only surface deep, it is not at all inside the cake. Is this the same case with you?

i don't think you meant to reply to me. also, you seem to be speaking of cakes while the subject is casings. IME, once green, always green. IOW you can dump salt on the visible patch of green and a day later the invisible becomes visible. assuming all things were kept sterile (casing mix, bins, air) my guess is that the green comes from YOU. prolly your skin, under your fingernails, your hair, your clothes, whatever.

Yeah I heat up a spoon and take it off the surface and then spray it with h20.h202 but I've also heard that using h20.h202 to water your casing reguarly can some what disturb the mycelium, someone mentioned it shocks the mycelium. I don't know.....Any thoughts?

using h2o/h202 on your casings regularly causes no problems. a good ratio is 1 part h2o2 to 10 parts h2o.

Sorry for the slack job of a reply. I was replying to you and I meant to use "casings" whenever I said cakes (I have that bad habbit). I agree that the green mold spores come from clothing, hair, skin ect . I also believe that if it is only surface deep and you catch it early , carefully remove it and spray with some h2o2 there is a good chance you can beat it.

a part= an arbitrary volume. be it a gallon a mL a pint, whatever. let's make a part = 1mL for example. 1mL of peroxide per 10mL of water. get it?

I have beaten the green on literaly dozens of occasions. I simply remove the contaminated part and douse the entire casing with H2O2 to kill any remaining mold spores. This only works for minor contamination btw.

that would definitely beat my technique which is simply dropping salt on it (works great for cobweb BTW). the few times i have tried spooning i just discovered that i might as well dig a damn tunnel through my substrate. when you say h2o2, do you mean STRAIGHT h2o2?

I mean to mix distilled water and peroxide, btw do you use regular table salt for the contamination? I dont know if you know but table salt can keep your humidity down. Put your humidity meter in a air tight container with a pop cap full of salt for a little bit......it will stabalize at 75%

yeah, table salt. i know how to calibrate a guage using salt. keep in mind that your trapping all the air in a bag with the salt, dry air that is not being refreshed with humidification. get my drift? IOW, a handful of salt, in a terrarium full of perlite with a humidifier running, especially a terrarium that is big enough to walk in and has a humidifier inside, has neglible effects on humidity.
