spore prints.... hmmmm....
    #1365728 - 03/11/03 11:26 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

allrighty, my pet walrus just picked up a spore print from the local headshop, and when he brought it home, I have to say, I wasn't impressed. I haven't dealt much with prints, but for some reason, I thought they would be kinda darker. Seems pretty light, but I can see a definite spore print, and it is in a little plastic petri dish, which is pretty clear. He said that he picked out the best looking one, but I'm still sceptical as to whether or not he could get a few syringes out of it or not...

Sorry that I can't post a picture, the walrus used any money I would have had to buy a digital camera to fund his mushroom growing operation

You could make two from it if it was very light.

how much did the pet walrus pay for a spore print from the local headshop?

I'd probably make 2 syringes also...spores go a long way.

he paid $22 canuck

apparently, the headshop is switching suppliers soon, once the current stock is out. The new supplier is supposed to be giving them 20cc syringes with about 3-4 times the amount of spores.... and, the new guy is local, which is always good

of course, this is all walrus-say, so one never can tell....

i guess if one usually only sees a few flecks of black in a spore syringe... then a visible print than covers about a 1 1/2 inch diameter (albeit lightly) area should be good for a couple syringes....

If you can see the spores, there are at least thousands and it only takes one.

Your cool. Just scrape the bottom of the petri with a sterile knife or something when you have your sterile water in there.

Or, pour some sterile honey water into the dish and let those spores germinate first, then make your syringes by sucking up the larger mycelium with the syringe and using that to innoculate. You could probably do this for weeks, every few days, and still see mycelium growing in the dish (as long as it doesn't contam).
