The best for hunting mushrooms in all categories would for sure be Mushrooms Demystified by David Arora. Its refered to as the bible for many mycologists.

I'd agree with everthing thats been said. I just wanted to enlighten you on a useful feature at the shroomery: the search button. This question has been asked at least 5 times in the past year.
I'm not bitching, just making sure you know about it

If you live in the PNW then I would suggest the Joseph Amiratti books. HEre is there reference. He is the replac ement at the University of Washington for the late Dr. dDaniel Stuntz. His large volumes are expensive but cover both Canadian western shrooms as well as the PNW shrooms. IF you live int he midwest or far east usa then the audubon guide edited by Gary Lincoff, or the Simon and shcuster book by lincoff. the latter has no psilocybe mushooms init. The publishers would not allow it.

but the audubon book. fdoes. Then there is the Arora books, Mushrooms dymitified and all that the rain promises and more.

HEre is the reference for the Amiratti9 book which covers some of thnorthewests psilocybian mushrooms

Ammirati, Joseph F., James A. Traquair and Paul A. Horgen. 1985. Hallucinogens. Poisonous Mushrooms of the Northern United States and Canada. Minister of Supply and Services Canada. Catalogue #A54-3/30E. University of Minnesota Press. Minneapolis. see Chap. 12:185-220. Also see 1989 edition.
A good reference and identification guide for edible, poisonous and entheogenic mushrooms in the Pacific Northwestern United States. Included are numerous photographs of species common to this region.

Ammirati, Joseph F., James A. Traquair and Paul A. Horgen. 1986. Poisonous Mushrooms of Canada, Including Other Inedible Fungi. Fitzhenry and Whiteside Ltd. (In cooperation with Agriculture Canada). 398p.

While the titles say poisonous they do cover edibles as well. It is always good to learn first what never to eat then what you are looking for. Then you willne er poison yourself or oterhs.

HI Mr. Mushroom,

regarding your section on poisonous mushrooms I shoulld like to recommend two out of print books which are available for viewing in reference sectuions of University libraries and medical centers.

The first is the Lincoff and Mitchell book and then the book by Emanuelle Saltzman.

Here are the references to those books which cover musheroom poisoning.

The first is a 100 page chapter by Lincoff and Mitchell in Toxic and Hallucionogenic Mushroom Poisoning:

Lincoff, Gary and D. H. Mitchell, M.D. 1977. Group 6: Psilocybin-psilocin (hallucinogenic poisoning). Toxic and Hallucinogenic Mushroom Poisoning:9-26, 100-135. 267pp. Van Nostrand Reinhold. New York.
A physicians handbook of mushroom toxins presents a brief history on the traditional use of entheogenic mushrooms in Mesoamerica. Their rediscovery by western society and descriptions of several well known and sought after North American varieties are presented. Dosages are included but caution should be given regarding proper dosage (See Allen, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980; Haard & Haard, 1975; Ott, 1993) for relateddosage information.

The second book by Rumack and Salzman titled, Mushroom P{oisoning Diagnosis and Treatment:

Rumack, Barry and Emanuell Saltzman (Eds.). 1978. Mushroom Poisoning: Diagnosis and Treatment. 263pp. CRC Press. West Palm Beach.
One of two books dealing specifically with psilocybian mushroom poisoning and other toxic muhrooms. In this particular book, several papers regarding case histories and treatment for psilocybian intoxication are presented. The second book on mushroom poisoning is Lincoff and Mitchell's Toxic and Hallucinogenic Mushroom Poisoning.

The Audobon Society Field Guide is probably one of the best.

The problem is, there's not a dichotomous key. I would suggest finding a guide with a key, using it, then verifying with the Audobon guide.

You can never have too many field guides.

I own: Audobon,
Poisonous and hallucinogenic Mushrooms, and
Mushrooms of Ontario and Eastern NA.

I recommend all of them ( Mushrooms of Ontario and Eastern NA has keys.)
