Viability of bacterial endospores (you will be astounded)
    #1365620 - 03/11/03 11:02 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

This sounds like some Jurassic park shit but:

They found an ancient bee-like insect preserved in amber. This bee is like 25 million years old. The did an analysis of its gut and found a bacterial endospore.

Now get this:

They fucking germinated the 25 myo endospore, and grew viable bacterial cells from it.

Holy fucking shit.

AFOAF needs to get a pressure cooker :]

I don't think it changes anything to tell you truth.

It might explain where some previously unheard of diseases come from.

Some scientists have theorized that life on earth originated from endospores from somewhere else in the universe. They can survive outer space.

The amber protects the spores from the environment.  I don't think that endospores can last that long if not in amber.  That means that we don't have to worry about anything, but if you go out into a country that sells amber:Dominican Republic.  Be careful you don't unleash a monster upon the population!

If they can survive the vacuum of space(and I'm pretty sure they can), They can probably survive in other places besides amber.

Thats where the whole earth-seeding idea. They could be travelling in space for millions of years (and if propelled by say a extremely high energy outout) at ridiculously high speeds.

Thats the problem with human space flight, our life span is not long enuf to travel far in space.

What makes you think they can survive in the vacuum of space, and 'propelled at high energy output'?
