- 1955: Time Magazine publishes article titled Medicine: Artificial Psychoses
Quote:
Medicine: Artificial Psychoses
Monday, Dec. 19, 1955
Amid a clutter of flasks and tubes, beakers and retorts in the Sandoz Laboratories in Basel, Researcher Dr. Albert Hoffman was doing a routine experiment when he had a common laboratory accident: somehow, he absorbed some of the fluid he was working with. He became muddled and confused. Four days later, satisfied that the offending substance was lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD-25), he weighed out a minute dose and took it deliberately. It struck him "like a bolt of lightning." Hoffman had to go home, but he had lost his perception of time and...

- 1968: The film Skidoo is released
Quote:
Skidoo is an American comedy film directed by Otto Preminger, starring Jackie Gleason and Carol Channing, written by Doran William Cannon and released by Paramount Pictures on December 19, 1968. The screenplay satirizes late 1960s lifestyle and its creature comforts, technology, anti-technology, hippies, free love and then-prevalent use of the mind-altering drug LSD.
Along with top-billed Gleason and Channing, Skidoo also stars (alphabetically listed) Frankie Avalon, Fred Clark (who died on December 5, two weeks before the film's release), Michael Constantine, Frank Gorshin, John Phillip Law, Peter Lawford, Burgess Meredith, George Raft, Cesar Romero, Mickey Rooney and Groucho Marx playing "God" (making, at age 77, his final film appearance). Singer-songwriter Nilsson, who wrote the score and receives credit as a member of the cast, appears in a few brief scenes with Fred Clark, as both portray prison tower guards swaying to Nilsson's music while under the influence of LSD.
Cast
Jackie Gleason as Tony Banks Carol Channing as Flo Frankie Avalon as Angie Fred Clark as A Tower Guard Michael Constantine as Leech Frank Gorshin as The Man John Phillip Law as Stash Peter Lawford as The Senator Burgess Meredith as The Warden George Raft as The Skipper Cesar Romero as Hechy Mickey Rooney as "Blue Chips" Packard and Groucho Marx played "God"
with Arnold Stang as Harry Doro Merande as The Mayor Phil Arnold as Her Husband Slim Pickens as The Switchboard Operator Robert Donner as Another Switchboard Operator Richard Kiel as Beany Tom Law as Geronimo
Jaik Rosenstein as "Eggs" Benedict Stacy King as The Amazon Renny Roker as A Prison Guard Roman Gabriel as A Prison Guard Nilsson as A Tower Guard Stone Country as Themselves and the Orange County Ramblers played the Green Bay Packers and introducing Austin Pendleton as Fred (The Professor) Alexandra Hay as Darlene and Luna as "God's" Mistress
Production
Writer Paul Krassner published a story in the February 1981 issue of High Times magazine, relating how Groucho Marx "prepared" for his role in the LSD-related movie by taking a dose of the drug in Krassner's company, and had a moving, largely pleasant experience (in his 1976 book, The Groucho Phile, Marx commented that both the movie and his performance as the mob boss God were "God-awful!"). Most of the rest of the cast and crew, though, apparently had no familiarity with the drug; in a later interview, Nilsson recounted that he simply pretended to be drunk for his role (his own subsequent LSD experience inspired The Point!, a 1970 animated movie Nilsson wrote and scored).
Pop culture buffs have noted that three cast members, Frank Gorshin (The Riddler), Burgess Meredith (The Penguin) and Cesar Romero (The Joker), played recurring villains in the 1966–68 Batman television series, which broadcast its final episode in March, nine months before Skidoo's release. The film's then-futuristic costume designer, Rudi Gernreich, also made an acting appearance on Batman and, in one 1966 two-part episode, Otto Preminger, himself, portrayed another of the show's recurring villains, Mr. Freeze (in the character's first appearance on the show, he was played by George Sanders and, when seen for the third time, by Eli Wallach).
After Preminger saw him perform with The Committee, an uncredited Rob Reiner was brought in to "write scenes for hippies".

Quote:
Dock Phillip Ellis, Jr. (March 11, 1945 – December 19, 2008) was a professional baseball player who pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates, among other teams in Major League Baseball. His best season was 1971, when he won 19 games for the World Series champion Pirates and was the starting pitcher for the National League in the All-Star Game. However, he is perhaps best remembered for throwing a no-hitter in 1970 and later stating that he had done it while under the influence of LSD.
Playing career
Ellis is best-known for several incidents during his career:
Beaning Reggie Jackson
Beaning Reggie Jackson in the face in apparent retaliation for Reggie's monstrous home run off Ellis in the 1971 All-Star Game in Detroit.
June 12, 1970 no-hitter
Ellis pitched a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres on June 12, 1970. He would admit in 1984 to being under the influence of LSD throughout the course of the game. Ellis had been visiting friends in Los Angeles under the impression he had the day off and was still high when his friend's girlfriend told him he had to pitch a game against the Padres that night. Ellis boarded a shuttle flight to the ballpark and threw a no-hitter despite not being able to feel the ball or clearly see the batter or catcher. Ellis said catcher Jerry May wore reflective tape on his fingers which helped Ellis to see his target. Ellis walked eight, struck out six, and was aided by excellent fielding plays by second baseman Bill Mazeroski and center fielder Matty Alou. During the game, teammates (such as rookie Dave Cash) are reported to have commented to Ellis on the bench between innings that he was pitching a no-hitter, despite the superstition that discourages mentioning a no-hitter while it is in progress. Because the no-hitter was the first game of a double header, Ellis was forced to keep track of the pitch count for the night game.
As Ellis recounted it:
I can only remember bits and pieces of the game. I was psyched. I had a feeling of euphoria. I was zeroed in on the (catcher's) glove, but I didn't hit the glove too much. I remember hitting a couple of batters and the bases were loaded two or three times. The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes, sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn't. Sometimes I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder. I started having a crazy idea in the fourth inning that Richard Nixon was the home plate umpire, and once I thought I was pitching a baseball to Jimi Hendrix, who to me was holding a guitar and swinging it over the plate. They say I had about three to four fielding chances. I remember diving out of the way of a ball I thought was a line drive. I jumped, but the ball wasn't hit hard and never reached me.
The incident inspired the songs "Dock Ellis" by indie rock singer Barbara Manning, "America's Favorite Pastime" by folk singer Todd Snider, "Dock Ellis' No-No" by Chuck Brodsky, and "LSD (The Ballad of Doc Ellis)" by Boston rock band Random Road Mother. Robin Williams has incorporated the tale into a standup routine for HBO An animated short film about the game, "Dock Ellis and the LSD No-No", features narration in Ellis's own voice, taken from a 2008 radio interview.
May 5, 1972 macing incident in Cincinnati
Arguing with and being maced by a Riverfront Stadium security guard on May 5, 1972. The guard said Ellis did not identify himself and "made threatening gestures with a closed fist"; Ellis countered that he was showing his World Series ring as evidence of his affiliation with the Pirates. [edit] May 1, 1974 game against Cincinnati
Ellis attempted to hit every batter in the Cincinnati Reds lineup on May 1, 1974, in an effort to prove a point to teammates. Ellis hit Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, and Dan Driessen in the top of the first. The clean-up batter Tony Perez avoided Ellis's attempts, instead drawing a walk, and after two pitches aimed at the head of Johnny Bench, Ellis was removed from the game by manager Danny Murtaugh. Ellis's box score for the game reads: 0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.
Later career
On December 11, 1975, Ellis was traded to the New York Yankees along with Ken Brett and Willie Randolph in exchange for Doc Medich. Ellis also played for the Oakland Athletics, Texas Rangers, and New York Mets. While with the Rangers, Ellis led a player insurrection against manager Billy Hunter's authoritarian style, declaring that Hunter "may be Hitler, but he ain't making no lampshade out of me." Ellis ended his career back in Pittsburgh. He finished with a lifetime record of 138-119 and an ERA of 3.46. Ellis collaborated with future U.S. Poet Laureate Donald Hall on a book, Dock Ellis in the Country of Baseball (ISBN 0-671-65988-X), which was published in 1976. Although Hall knew of the LSD incident, it was not included in the first edition of the book.
Retirement and death
Ellis retired to Victorville, California, and a career as a drug counselor. An alcoholic, he was diagnosed with cirrhosis in 2007 and was on the list for a transplant at the time of his death. ESPN.com reported on December 19, 2008, that Ellis had died at USC Medical Center in Los Angeles due to "a liver ailment."

Wow, really? That is really cool. How much did you pay for them and which cards were they? And yeah, I love that video. But the video I would die for is the footage of the LSD no-hitter game. WHO HAS THAT FOOTAGE?

Wow, what a deal. That's such a good buy. But as for the video footage, I KNOW it exists somewhere. I'm pretty sure HBO used a clip from it on some show they did. I wanna say that I saw it, but I can't be sure since it was a long time ago. But I wanna see the whole game. There must be some way we can obtain the footage. It's out there. Let's get it done.

Rumor has it that it may not have even been taped, and if it was taped the MLB might be reluctant to release the footage because of its potentially embarrassing impact to the league.. It'd be cool to here some audio of the game though. It does seem like that's gotta be available considering it sounds like that short film contains a small bit of audio from the game
It's strange too because if you read this http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/lsd/lsd_history3.shtml a bunch of the details are mixed around in the recount of dock ellis's no-no

You think it would be embarrassing to the league after 40 years? I can't see it, but who knows. You might be right about the video not existing, or that MLB doesn't want to release it. Check this out...........

It is time for me to put my money where my mouth is -- metaphorically that is, I'm not going to eat money, that's far too extravagant for me -- the Slanch Report has started an online petition asking the MLB Network to air the Dock Ellis no-hitter he threw on June 12, 1970 against the San Diego Padres. The moment was a seminal piece of baseball history and is certainly as worthy of being rerun as the Mark Fidrych games the network showed earlier this year just before Fidrych's unfortunate death. Please PLEASE PLEASE join us in this cause and sign the petition below so we can all share in this special and fantastic moment of baseball history. THANKS! SIGN THE PETITION HERE! AND PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND PASS THIS ALONG!
[Air the Dock Ellis No-Hitter]
*(UPDATE)* I received an email from the folks over at MLB Network, our petition WORKED -- well, in that it attracted their attention -- unfortunately, they've searched their archives and MLB does NOT have any footage of the game. Or at least that's what they claim. I did ask for them to air the Dock Ellis game where he tried to bean all the Cincinnati Reds and was thrown out after the 5th batter instead. They haven't gotten back to me on that one. So, MLB may not have footage but there has to be SOME SOMEWHERE right? Spread the word, check your attics, we MUST find this footage. And to everyone who signed or passed along this petition, all 1200+(!) of you, I am most most most incredibly thankful. You're all heroes in my book.

Baseball is all tied into the youth. They all ready have enough problems with steroids and performance enhancing drugs, so I doubt they'd want to publicize the fact that guys like dock ellis were taking LSD and playing baseball. But me personally, I certainly hope that some day some old timer finds an old dusty tape of the game up in his attic and releases it. I just don't think the MLB would officially release it, or say they had it, even if they did.
By the way, did you ever send in that interview to Pickard?

Well if they released it, it would be just barely public. I can't imagine anyone under 18 wanting to watch it. So I don't think kids are an issue. But yeah, I hope some day it surfaces. I would love to see every one of his pitches that game. It's probably so hilarious.
Yeah, I did an update about the Pickard interview. The guy who passes the e-mails on to Pickard from his website said that those questions are awesome but that Pickard wouldn't answer most of them. The guy did tell me that Pickard categorically denies ever having worked for the DEA though.

Yup, every interview I have seen with Pickard, he has always denied working with the DEA.
That's what happens when your cookin acid and working with the wrong fucking people. You get caught. It's sad, but he made some wrong decisions.
As for Dock Ellis, I would LOVE to see that game, but I have made a search before and never found anything. Someone please tell me I am wrong!

No, no one knows how to get a copy of the game. The tape definitely exists, but how we can get it is beyond me. Someone would really have connections with the Pirates organization or something. I don't know.
