SLOW COOKERS
    #2232240 - 01/09/04 08:36 PM (20 years, 23 days ago)

I received a crock pot or slow cooker as a gift. Does anyone have any recipes or hints?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Turn it into a tabletop moonshine still.

Pfft.. slow cookers are cool, ya let 'em sit all day (I hear chicken is a favorite) and then you have some damn fine tender & tasty meat for dinner.  My mama got one while I was home for the holidays but unfortunately time did not allow me to make use of it this time around.  I'd be interested to hear any favorite recipies from others though!.. seems like you should brown your meat first, throw it in, add any spices or stock/liquid as you please, some veggies, and let that mofo (are you ready for this?...) slow cook  - then again, I'm just guessing :tongue2:

Be sure to let us know what you cook first chinadoll  :sun:

Mine has an inner ceramic pot that is removeable. When i cook a roast i marinate it overnite in worshteshire, soy sauce, a little italian dressing, some A-1,a little suger, salt, fresh pepper, some herbs like rosemary and thyme, and i cut little slits in it and stick garlic cloves in it.I do this and let it soak overnight right in the removable pot, then i cook on the lowest setting all day.when its done its hard to even take it out of the crockpot because the meat is so tender it falls apart.

Slow cookers are great, I recommend getting a cookbook just designed for them.  Slow cookers are one of the best ways to cook things like soups with stew meat, that really tenderizes the meat.  Good luck with your slow cooking adventures

My favorite thing about slow cookers is that recipes are simple and you can have supper ready right when you get home from work.

My favorite is to cut up carrots and potato into large pices, take one boneless chuck roast, one packet of liption onion soup mix, 1 can whole tomatoes and about a cup of water...

Just throw it all in their and turn it on when you leave for work.. When you get home, just serve it on a plate.

Cant get better than that...

Ive made stew in mine and had the same problem the potatoes ect were like mush, now i stagger the igrediants, based on how long they take to cook,so for example now i add the potatoes in the last2- 3 hours or so(depending on what setting i have it on and then they stay firmright up untill the end.I add some chopped up carrots, some herbs, onions whatever in the begining to by wrapping them in a piece of cheesecloth and putting them in in the begining.I leave this in untill its tim eto add the real ingrediants then i take the little package out and throw it away.
This way the vegtables are not over cooked but the stew tastes like those things were cooked in it all day you get the flavor.

I guess that's why all the recipes don't call for potatoes and suggest rice or noodles on the side.

Here is what I do. You take left over boneless meat (usually poultry here) put it in the pot with carrots (3 or 4) and potatoes (3 or 4 small) and green beans (1 bag?). Add a can of tomato sauce and enough chicken broth to almost fill it up. Add seasonings like basil, thyme, rosemary, salt, pepper or season all. About an hour away from the finish I add a bag of lentils. This is in no way a set recipe just do not over season it or overcook it. Makes a great soup out of left overs.

A slow cooker is the best way (In my opinion) to cook rabbit.Put them in stewed tomatoes and let it cook all day.

I love my slow cooker.  Use it, and you will love yours too.

I use it mostly for stews, and sometimes I cook roast in it.  I usually just cook it over night, and I wake up the next morning to delicious roast in the morning. :tongue2:

My favorite is cooking lamb in the slow cooker.  I just place the lamb roast in the slow cooker with some diced onions and garlic, a can of drained chick peas, and a can of tomato sauce.  I let the slow cooker do its thing, and I eat it with some rice.

:sarcasticclap: 6 years ago this info would have been useful to the OP.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned that whenever cooking beans in a slow cooker, at some point in the cooking process a heavy boil should be given for ten minutes to avoid toxicity issues.
