Ps. cyan in Santa Barbara?
    #13651062 - 12/18/10 10:06 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Hey all, great place here.  Lurker, new poster.  I'm a botanist convert to fungi ID nerd nooby.  Been enjoying finding and IDing shrooms of all types throughout the Central Coast, but I'm really just learning still.  Been doing alot of Agaricus and other edibles, not particularly focused on actives, but...I found the shrooms pictured here in Santa Barbara, near the coast, on 12/17/10.  Incredible blueing reactions. Are they Ps. cyanescens? They key here in Aurora.  I know it's possible based on range, but maybe rare this far south?
Thanks in advance!

Habitat: Woodchips, irrigated
Gills:  Pale to buff, mottled (spores?), blueing
Stem: White and bruising blue easily
Cap: Caramel colored when young, margin striate but not upturned (at least in these young specimens), viscid.  Older (?) specimens dark blue-greyish.  Young specimens blueing easily when handled.
Spore print color:purpleish brown
Bruising: Easily and quickly blueing

San Luis Obispo might be a bit far down I think, maybe towards the coast you could have some luck.

Maybe coastal SLO County, I found these friscosas less than a mile from the ocean, in the fog zone.

Nice find.  For an officially unnamed species, the Friscosas are spreading like mad.

[Nice find.  For an officially unnamed species, the Friscosas are spreading like mad.]

Blame the spread on Caltrans, if "blame" is the right word.  These were in Caltrans landscape beds.  Many many miles of relatively new wood chip landscape plantings along Hwy 101 between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.  Anyone want to walk the highway picking up "trash"?
