Fast way of chopping straw
    #1364939 -

The subject line says it all.
Can someone please tell SWIM an effecient way of getting her straw to 3 inch peices or smaller? A small device from a garden center perhaps? Anything!?
SWIM's hands are so tired of using scissors.

Thanks!!

aside from a chipper/shredder a grass mower can be made to work.

soaking the straw first helps .
spread it out on a piece of plywood, and pulverize it with a hammer  :smirk:
i use the side edge of a 12 oz. claw hammer .

If i had more space I would try the plywood thing. How small of a chipper shredder can you get these days?

Ok... here is the best and cheapest way to make your straw usable:

Feed it all to a horse and wait for it to come out the other end. It will come out in moist, steamy clumps. Let it dry and then use it grow mushies.

you don't need to use a full sheet of plywood .do it outdoors, its a lil' messy .

if you want to do a whole bail of straw at once, then renting a leaf vac shredder would be the way to go . they are about the size of a lawn mower .
