Yeah, I don't get the Trader Joe hate.  I don't buy produce there because I don't expect it to be grocery store but their prepared shit is excellent.

Is Whole Foods a good place to go for cheeses?  I've been wanting to drop like $50 on some nice HQ cheeses to last a month or so.  I would have been by there to purchase some Rye Berries but their purchaser was never in and they never called me back so they lost out on that one.

I'm not sure about Whole Foods, but Trader Joe's has some good deals on the cheeses they carry.  They have a nice Kaltbach gruyere which kicks ass, and occasionally carry Kaltbach emmentaler...

Never bought cheese at whole foods but i agree that trader joe's has an excellent cheese selection. The celtic sharp white cheddar is top notch.

Luckily I live near enough to an organic dairy that I can get it there.

Trader Joes offers a good selection of cheese, but doesn't come close to the selection offered by Whole Foods.  In fact, even my regular Ralphs (parent company Kroger) has remodeled and is offering an excellent assortment of cheeses.  I've got to say, cheese is one of the things I miss most on the nutritional plan I'm trying out over the next 60 days.

If you're a big spender, and love cheese, crackers and charcuterie; do yourself a favor and find some Raincoast Crisps.  They're a blistering $6 or $7 per package, but damn if they aren't the best crackers I've ever had.  Paired with your favorite cheese and some thin slices of jamon, proscuitto or fine salami and jesus is no longer a man, but the perfect hors d'oeuvre.

PS.  Does anyone else find it a little ironic that we're talking about food we love in "the worst food you have tasted" thread? :flowstone:

OK, back on topic, the worst "food" I have ever tried would have to be head cheese.  The flavor's not that horrible, but the texture makes me wanna puke!

Either Tamarind candy from Mexico when I was younger, or the vomit-flavored Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans that Jelly Belly made.

Tasted so real.  :puke:

Quote:

Hákarl or kæstur hákarl (Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈhauːkʰartl̥]) (Icelandic for "fermented shark") is a food from Iceland. It is a Greenland or basking shark which has been cured with a particular fermentation process and hung to dry for four to five months. Hákarl is an acquired taste[citation needed] and has a very particular ammonia-rich smell and fishy taste, similar to very strong cheese slathered in ammonia.

I actually remember having that when I was younger and thinking it wasnt bad. They brought us in some to taste during shark dissection day and later I remember wanting more. It was very distinct.

So what y'all call head cheese is what we call souse meat. Just figured that out. It is most excellent noms in spicy form.

Most of the stuff y'all have mentioned sounds at worst unpalatable. Nothing seems too extremely vile or horrid except for maybe the Hakarl. I mean who thought piss-flavored shark jerky was a good idea?
