Profile
McKenna's research led to the development of natural products for Aveda Corporation as well as greater awareness of natural products and medicines. He has authored numerous scientific articles and books. He co-authored The Invisible Landscape with his brother Terence. McKenna spent a number of years as a senior lecturer for the Center for Spirituality and Healing, part of the Academic Health Center at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. - 1966: Cream's single for "I Feel Free" b/w "N.S.U." hits the UK charts
Quote:
"I Feel Free" is a song first recorded by the British rock band Cream. The lyrics were written by Pete Brown, with the music by Jack Bruce. The song showcases the band's musical diversity, effectively combining blues rock with psychedelic pop.
"I Feel Free" was released in the UK by Reaction Records as the group's second single and reached number 11 on the singles chart. In the US, Atco Records issued it as their debut single as well as the opening track on the group's first album, Fresh Cream (1966).
Background
"I Feel Free" was recorded in September 1966 at Ryemuse Studios. The song was recorded on an Ampex reel-to-reel audio tape recorder by Robert Stigwood and John Timperley. Stigwood made the decision to omit the song on the British release of Fresh Cream, and instead released it as a single.
Charts
"I Feel Free" first entered the UK Singles Chart on 17 December 1966 at number 50, hit its highest position on 28 January 1967 at number 11, and was last seen on 4 March 1967 at number 49; the song spent a total of 12 weeks on the charts. In the US the single reached number 116 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart in December 1967.

- 1968: Owsley Stanley is acquitted for January 24, 1968 LSD arrest
Quote:
LSD KING' ACQUITTED OF SELLING TO AGENT
Augustus Owsley Stanley III, 34, the self-styled "king of LSD," Tuesday [December 17, 1968] was acquitted of selling 500 capsules of the psychedelic drug to an undercover agent. Superior Judge Paul W. Egley, after a five-day non jury trial, ruled that there was insufficient evidence connecting Stanley with the sale Jan. 24 at International Airport. Stanley, reputedly one of the largest manufacturers of LSD in the United States, was arrested along with Jessie L. Clifton, 21, just after arriving from San Francisco where both lived. Clifton, who actually sold the drug to the officer, previously pleaded guilty to one count of possession and three counts of sale of LSD. He was placed on three years' probation and sentenced to four months in county jail. The prosecution alleged that the sale was made after Clifton received an affirmative signal from Stanley. However, Clifton was called as a defense witness and testified that he had no connection with Stanley.
(The Los Angeles Times (Los Angeles, California) 18 Dec 1968, Wed Page 44)
Stanley Charged in LSD Sale
Augustus Owsley Stanley III, and an associate were indicted by a Los Angeles grand jury yesterday on charges of selling $3,500 worth of LSD to an undercover agent. Stanley, who was arrested last December in Orinda with $11 million worth of LSD. was indicted on one count of selling LSD to a narcotics agent Jan. 24 in Los Angeles. His associate, Jessie L. Clifton, 2Q, was indicted on three counts of selling LSD and one count of possession of LSD for sale in connection with the same incident at the Los Angeles International Airport. Stanley, 33, is free on bond and is expected to surrender Monday. Clifton is in custody. Stanley is scheduled for arraignment Feb. 23 in the Orinda case. Before LSD was put into the dangerous drug category by the California legislature, Stanley was reputed to have become a millionaire manufacturing the "acid". Us purity became a hippie legend.

- 1968: Pink Floyd release the single for "Point Me At The Sky" b/w "Careful With That Axe, Eugene"
Quote:
"Point Me at the Sky" is the fifth U.K. single by the British band Pink Floyd, released on 17 December 1968. The song was an early collaboration by bassist Roger Waters and guitarist David Gilmour. The single was not released in the U.S. However, it was released by Capitol Records in Canada (catalog number 72563) as well as in Japan, and some European countries. The vocals on the verse of the song are sung by Gilmour, and the bridge vocals are shared between Gilmour and Waters.
Point Me at the Sky has since become the most obscure of all officially released Pink Floyd recordings. It was left out of the 1971 collection Relics and was not re-issued until the 1992 CD collection The Early Singles, a bonus disc in the Shine On box set.
Because it was not intended for album release all available versions of this recording are a mono mix. There has never been a stereo mix version. The mono mix has a rather "muddy" sound quality. Because of the relatively poor sound (little improved, even on the CD release) it is somewhat difficult for fans to get an accurate interpretation of the science-fiction like lyrics. Musically, the song starts out quietly and then becomes a heavy piece of psychedelia, at times sounding very similar to "The Nile Song."
The record did not chart. Because of their dislike of singles Pink Floyd did not release another single in the UK until 1979's "Another Brick in the Wall, Part II" from The Wall. Its B-side, "Careful with That Axe, Eugene," became far more popular, as it was later included on two different Pink Floyd albums and played regularly at concerts throughout the early 1970s.
A different performance of Point Me at the Sky was recorded and broadcast by the BBC in late 1968, but this has never been officially released on record. The group made a promotional film for the song in which they posed in goggles and flight outfits with a 1920s vintage aeroplane. A still picture from this photo session was included in promotional materials given away with the U.K. single and on a picture sleeve version released in Europe. Alternate still shots from the same session appeared in the artwork for the 1973 LP A Nice Pair and the booklet for 1992 remastered CD of A Saucerful of Secrets.
A remake of the song was recorded by the Los Angeles group Acid Casualties which featured guitarist Robbie Krieger of The Doors. It was included on the group's only album, Panic Station, released by Rhino Records in 1982.

"Careful with That Axe, Eugene" is an instrumental song by the British band Pink Floyd. The studio recording is featured on Relics, while a live version can be found on Ummagumma. The song was originally released as the B-side of their single "Point Me at the Sky." Pink Floyd re-recorded the track for Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni's film Zabriskie Point. The song is retitled "Come in Number 51, Your Time Is Up" on the soundtrack album for the film. A performance of the track is also featured in the film Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii.
Composition
The music consists of a light, organ-based jam (using the "Egyptian" style organ that is common of Richard Wright in this period), and an accompanying bass guitar playing just one tone (in this case, D) in octaves, with a segue into the song's only lyrics: the title of the song whispered menacingly, followed by a Roger Waters scream, as in "Candy and a Currant Bun". This scream would reappear on many subsequent songs such as "Run Like Hell", the very beginning of "Another Brick in the Wall Part 2", and "Two Suns in the Sunset". Then the song becomes much louder and more intense before gradually settling down again. In the heavier parts and later, quieter parts, David Gilmour can be heard with guitar and scat vocals; in concert, Gilmour would often sing along with his guitar line.
For the re-recording made for Zabriskie Point, "Come In Number 51, Your Time Is Up," whispering and a choir were added. David Gilmour and Roger Waters provided the vocals, and Waters' screaming is noticeably louder. It is a complete instrumental; unlike the original "Careful with That Axe, Eugene," "Come in Number 51, Your Time Is Up" does not feature the spoken words "Careful with that axe, Eugene," and is in the key of E minor instead of the original D minor. In the film, it plays at the end during an explosion sequence filmed in slow motion. In the booklet of the soundtrack's reissue, David Fricke writes: "'Come In Number 51, Your Time Is Up' is a cryptically titled remake of the Floyd's volcanic 1968 B-side 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene.' But its bonfire sound — all roaring guitars, crashing drums, and death-throe screaming — is the perfect complement to the movie's cataclysmic finish."
Live history
Pink Floyd performed the song at almost every show from 1968-1973 and once in 1977. An embryonic form was performed as early as 23 May 1968 (captured in a recording at The Paradiso in Amsterdam) under the original title of "Keep Smiling People", and another version was recorded on 25 June 1968 at BBC Piccadilly Studios and broadcast on John Peel's Top Gear radio program 11 August 1968 with the title "Murderistic Woman".
During the 1969 tour, it was performed as "Beset by Creatures of the Deep" as part of The Man and the Journey. From autumn 1969 until August 1971 it was often played as a medley in conjunction with "Green Is the Colour".
During Pink Floyd's late 1972 European tour, the song was occasionally performed with a loud (and largely indecipherable) Pictish rant preceding the uttering of the song's title and its trademark scream. A particularly well-known example is the performance from the band's December 1972 concert in Zürich, and their concert on November 15, 1972 in Germany.
Pink Floyd performed "Careful with That Axe, Eugene" for the last time as a part of their regular concert set on 22 June 1974 in Colmar, as a part of their French Tour (18–24 June). A one-off performance was done in Oakland, California, on May 9, 1977, as an encore. For this rendition, Richard Wright had to use a mini-Moog synthesizer in place of the Farfisa organ he used originally on the live version and the Hammond organ on the studio version. Snowy White, the band's touring guitarist at the time, was coaxed into performing the piece with the band despite having never heard the song before, let alone played it.
Alternative versions and references
* The song title has been referenced in the lyrics of Dream Theater's song "Octavarium", from the album of the same name.
* This song is referenced also by Half Man Half Biscuit on their Back in the DHSS album. In "Time Flies By (When You're The Driver Of A Train)", Eugene is asked to be 'careful with that spliff'.
* In The Damned's "Nasty" where Dave Vanian sings "Careful with that axe you meanie". Pink Floyd's Nick Mason had produced The Damned's second album, Music for Pleasure.
* Phish also references "Careful with that Axe, Eugene" in their 1997 live release Slip Stitch and Pass during "Mike's Song".
* The song title is the name of one of the levels in the 1984 computer game Revenge Of The Mutant Camels developed and published by Llamasoft.
* This song is used as background music in the first episode of the documentary The Ascent of Man, titled Lower Than the Angels at the Internet Movie Database.

Quote:
In the early 1970s the RCMP knew Ladysmith was a focal point of MDA distribution, and were aware of Williams because of an earlier marijuana charge and his association with Elliott. In 1972 their suspicions were raised because Williams’ Institute of Mycology was receiving large quantities of a key component of MDA, and they embarked on an investigation of his activities. For the next eighteen months they conducted intense surveillance of Williams and his associates, making multiple clandestine visits to their properties, entering buildings, installing rudimentary phone taps, and setting up cameras on neighbouring properties. Chemical shipments addressed to Williams’ Institute were traced and sometimes intercepted. Throughout, Williams watched with amusement, convinced he could outwit the RCMP.
Despite these efforts, the police obtained no direct evidence of MDA manufacture until a listening bug on Elliott’s property picked up sounds characteristic of production. On December 17, 1973, they conducted a raid and caught Elliott and his young son in the final stages of cooking MDA. A concurrent raid at Williams’ property revealed a partial recipe for MDA but nothing else of consequence. Both Williams and Elliott were nevertheless arrested and charged with conspiracy to manufacture and traffic in MDA, as well as trafficking in and possession of MDA for purpose of trafficking.
They went to trial in Nanaimo in late 1974, interestingly before a judge who was a family friend of Ashby and who took the unusual step of giving him access to his personal records for this book. This allowed Ashby to provide a uniquely detailed account of the trial. The judge convicted Elliott of trafficking in MDA but found the case against Williams was insufficient to establish guilt. Elliott’s conviction was later set aside on appeal leaving the RCMP with nothing to show for their efforts.
Undaunted, Williams believed the RCMP were no match for his cunning and he and Elliott were shortly open for business again. They established a new MDA lab hidden on a remote mountainside, accessible only by foot and off-road dirt bikes.
Nor were the RCMP prepared to down tools. They discovered this lab in February 1977 but found it empty with no evidence of active production. When they returned a few days later to plant a listening device they found the lab had been destroyed. Williams and Ridge had detected the presence of strangers and blew it up, describing this as “a simple business calculation” (p. 125). Business interruption was not a concern as they were concurrently operating several other labs.

I'll be honest I don't know much about Dennis McKenna other than quick references to him in information printed about Terrence, usually just about him being there with Terrence at times generally. I think I'm going to try and learn a slight bit more about this fellow today I'm sure he had/has quite a life as well.

Yeah, I don't know much about him either. It's a shame, we all could have learned more about him some years back when The Shroomery had plans on doing an interview with him. But just like my William Pickard interview, it wasn't meant to be. Let me know if you find out anything else cool about him.

-------------------- An old man and his grandson are sitting by the fire outside the tepee, wrapped in furs and gazing into the leaping flames. High on a snowy ridge, a wolf howls at the moon and another answers from far away. Soon after, the old man removes the pipe from his mouth. ‘Grandson,’ he says. ‘There are two wolves inside you. One is white and the other is black.’ ‘What are they doing there, Grandfather?’ asks the wide-eyed boy. ‘They are fighting each other,’ says the old man. The boy considers this, then asks, ‘Why are they white and black?’ ‘The white one is your love, your peace and your truth. The black one is your fear, your anger and your lies.’ The fire crackles and sparks flare in the night. The wolf on the ridge howls again and the old man puffs contentedly on his pipe. Finally, the boy says, ‘Which one will win, Grandfather?’ ‘Ah,’ says the old man, removing the pipe once more. ‘The one that wins is the one that you feed.’
