are you not calibrating your hygrometers?...they are not perfect right out of the package.

Salt calibration is unreliable. Wrap it in a damp towel for 30 minutes, then calibrate to 99%.
I have the same hygrometer, and I know for a fact that this particular hygrometer needs to be re-calibrated every so often.

Not so much 'unreliable', as just not relevant for mycology. If you wanted to measure in the 65-85 range, salt calibration would be ideal.

thats because we calibrate the instrument in the environment it will be working in , which is near saturation. A hygrometers accuracy is not linear.

I tried that link and got this::: Your search - hair hygrometer - could not be completed with the requested search options. Reset search tools :::
So your saying salt saturation is not relevent. However gets the guaranteed humidy of 75? So that means when you wrap in a cloth it isnt really 99%?

We wrap the hygrometer in a damp towel because that will be very very close to the environment we will be working in which is near saturation, thats the goal right, to have an RH of 99% or similar?
if your goal is to work within 75% RH then calibrate it with the salt test method.
Salt test methos is for cigars
Damp towel method is for Mycology use.
it can get confusing but dont loose any sleep over it just do like this and you will be good:
1. wrap in damp towel for 30-60 min
2. if the hygrometer reads Low turn the screw clockwise to 98-99%
3 if it reads 100% turn the screw counter clockwise to 98-99 percent.

HIJACK!
How do I tell if my hygrometer can't be calibrated? I found a hole to stick a screwdriver and turn the copper coil, but it just springs back.

take it apart. I got a heap one from petco(which wasnt too cheap honestly) and just removed the from and back then just moved it so when it would spring back it would go to 99.

Jsut wrap it in the wet towel for a hour. Take it out and see what it says, thats your new 99% mark.

Thanks guys. I only have one, so I'm a bit scared to mess it up. Towel test gives 80%, so I'll pretend that's 100%. Assuming towel test works, I have top notch RH in my FC Room RH is 30%, I guess that's reasonable this time of year.
thanks again!

So question i went through the same thing as this guy and did both tests and ended up going on what the salt test said. So i am going to do the damp towel test again. Last time i got it soaking wet, which i'm guessing is too much. So to get a towel damp, do i soak it then ring it as much as i can so all excess water is out or will completely drenching it just make it read 100%?
