Disappearing neon pink spots
    #1362209 - 03/10/03 08:12 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

A batch of jars was innoculated with some South American spores. Several days later, the mycelium was starting to grow, but there were also 2-3 very small, round, wet looking, neon pink spots in a couple of the jars near where they were injected, but not at all 4 holes. Several days later the jars were checked and the mycelium was growing strong and there was no sign of the pink stuff anywhere. I looked around and the only thing that resembles it ( but not very closely ) was lipstick mold. Did the mycelium wipe the colored stuff out, or are the jars still contaminated? I've seen green, brown, orange, black, and yellow, but I've never seen this pink stuff before!

Check the inside of the cakes when you birth them. There's nothing you can do untill then but watch out that pink stuff, some dangerous species of contams have that color.

So does that mean if I can't find it, its gone? Usually when jars get contams it is very visually and/or smellibly (sp?) obvious. I wasn't aware that contams can be eliminated by mycelium, is this possible?

Yes, the mycelia can kill contams, infact I've seen it happen a couple times. My pet rhinocerous had a 50% colonized jar, and some brown mold started to sprout from a corner. He set it aside and watched the progress, the mycellia engulfed it and upon crumbling of the cake, the contam was not present. The strength of the mycelia depends mostly on age, and strain.

Well I'll be damned, or maybe in this case blessed!   So far all signs are either completely gone, or being consumed by the mycelium. I'll have them checked out real good after they are birthed just to be sure. I don't think those cakes will be used, for safety's sake, but that's good to know.
