ID for a photographer?
    #13615121 - 12/10/10 10:34 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I didn't harvest this but I was hoping I could get a name as I plan on submitting it in a local photography contest.

Habitat: Wood

Gills: Black

Location: Picked in South East Pennsylvania.

Height: 3-4 inches, it was only about as tall as my lens.

That mushroom looks dried out. Was it?

It's very hard to ID dried mushrooms.

I advise any noob looking to identify mushrooms to fill out the ID form and provide clear photographs. Knowledge is a privilege and deserves respect. Let's give due props to the experts!

Do you have a pictures of the gills?

Cool picture!! i messed around with it in photoshop a little bit. Adjusted brightness/contrast, sharpen filter, and denoise filter.

In my humble opinion, it was better before you edited it. It had better detail, contrast and looked less manipulated.

Nice shot b5200! You should make up a title like "Black Mushroom #9" or something. Good luck!

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

Probably an old Pluteus specimen, the form of the pileus is also suggestive of some Cystoderma species although they are usually a lot more granulose or powdery in texture and usually have a conspicuous annulus, this granulose texture and annulus may have deteriorated due to age and weathering but I'm leaning towards Pluteus.

The specimen is a bit old and we would need more information to figure out exactly what it is, maybe you could go back to the location to see if there are any younger specimens and maybe get a spore print and photographs of the underside, good luck with your competition, it's a good image but a shame that the specimen is old and dry.
