Don't spend a bunch of money on a program. There are too many free websites with just as good information. You can try joining a language learning exchange where you find someone that speaks Italian and wants to learn English and you chat with them on Skype. It also helps to listen to music and watch movies in the language.

I've heard this too.
Also, a good (constructive) way to learn a language is to pick up a dictionary of their words, and start learning ones that you might find useful. Learn nouns and verbs that you use often in English, and ones you will likely need. Sometimes the courses teach you words you know you will never use.
Learn the grammatical structure of the language as well, as a "template" for your vocabulary.
The most practical thing for a beginner is how to learn how to order food, shop, and to ask for/give directions, as these are commonly needed when visiting a foreign country.

The only problem about learning nouns and verbs is how to construct a sentence...You start to speak like an indian!(ops, native american) Cuz italian has a very different sentence structure from english. All languages that come from latin do.(thats why you see me sometimes write sentences that dont make any sense... Anyway i speak italian.Whenever you need help gimme a buzz.About online learning i know nothing.I learned my languages in school and university.

Your local library should have rosetta stone Italian, and if they don't they'll order it for you.

Parlo d'italiano. I learned to speak italian in college. Its very similar to spanish if you know how to speak that a little bit. It was easy to catch on.
