Mini Clean Room

Ya just gotta love gov surplus auctions. Foaf stumbled into this at one. It is a gov spec closet sized glassed in (except the louvered metal back) computer tape storage unit.

Foaf was walking by, noticed it & a tiny light went " bink " in his beany.

He checks it out & it is big enough to stand & set on a stool in & still have a small working surface area in front of you.

Idea is to close off the louvered back, except the very bottom, install a fan & 24 X 24 X 12 UPLA w/pre/filter on top it. Flow would be downward & vent at the floor level.

Cost of unit was $56.....................

Thank you Lana.............love your tattoo.....BTW..........

Biggest problem was getting that 250 lb phone booth sized glass SOB to the shop, without busting it. It got done, but was a hell of a choir. I cringed ever time the P/U hit a bump.

I once got a 'little black box' at gov surplus. It was about three inches square had a little 9-pin (or maybe 15, this was about 10 years ago) port on the side, a timex sticker with a serial number, and a white dot on three adjacent sides with an arrow around the dot and a number inside the arrow. Three bucks, why not, what the hell...

So I call up timex and give them the numbers on the sticker and ask if they can send me a manual for whatever it is that I have. They take my name and number and give the 'we will get back to you -wink- -wink-' good-bye.

A few days later I get a call from timex. Turns out that I have a jewel in the rough. It is a gyroscope out of some missle system... he wouldn't tell me which one. They offer me $10,000 on the spot, no questions asked, if I sell it back to them... I was a starving college kid and had no trouble at all with that exchange.

You never know what you will find at surplus.

Compaq model?

I remember reading about your "server room" tales a while ago. It never hit me you were talking about a "rack mount".

I've seen portable server rooms too.

Compaq's are the only ones I'm aware of, that have the glass fronts.

Silicone, plexiglass, and a roto-zip tool are your friends for making this air-tight. It would totally work good besides the front door.

Don't slam the door, be gently, the locks slide fairly easily and then you have to kick out the glass. Not fun.

FYI: I just moved 100 of these things over the past two weeks, I will update to this thread when I find out if I can buy them or have them. The client upgraded from all these compaq racks, to more standarized Liebert racks.

one 1000watt HID will only add $20 a month to your bill.. And that is an overkill light for self grow.. or so I hear.
