1. I think this is Agaricus campestris

Lighter inserted for scale
Habitat: North California woods, meadow, grass.
Gills: White maturing to brown, adnate gills
Stem: white/light brown?, smooth, solid, thick
Cap: white smooth
Spore print color: Brown
Bruising: None
looks like an Agaricus bisporus but scaled up, to me.
Nom nom?
2.

Lighter inserted for scale.
Habitat: Northern California grass near school, sawdust or woodchips may have been present
Pileus: White with light brown, angel food cake top
Stipe: white
Spore Print: Black (very dark brown?)
Thanks for all help

1) Agaricus xanthodermus 2) Leratiomyces percevalii
A. campestris does not stain yellow, does not have a bulbous base, does not smell like ink and has a much less substantial annulus.

i notice no bright yellowing on the cap margin and stipe base when I cut them, as I should see with Agaricus xanthodermus, could that be because of age?
i squeezed, and pinched them but didn't see yellowing at all actually, even asked a friend.
A. californicus bruises slower. I should look in sunlight later.
Thoughts?

I think I can see some yellow staining almost the color of a highlighter around the top of the cap in pic 1.

- OR - if the OP really wants it to be A. campestris, go ahead and eat it. I promise you will be able to see that yellow the next time.

http://www.capsandstems.com/Agaricus_xanthodermis.htm The small may be faint, even impossible for some to detect. The color and shape of the caps are variable. Cut or scratch the stem near the base. Pay close attention to the smell as you cook it and if you still want to eat it sample only a small amount. Save the uneaten portion for the paramedics. >:D

From mycoweb on Agaricus campestris:
Quote:
Gills close, free, pink, becoming blackish-brown at maturity.
I don't think they'll have pallid gills when young.

i might try the cooking of a small portion. this smell, i've heard it described as inky, anyway else you could describe it? this one smells of A. bisporus to me maybe, regular mushroom odor.
it will learn me right good if i mess this up.

i thought it might be the camera acting up perhaps with the yellow but upon zooming it couldn't be that.
good thing i didn't get around to(hunts are fun) trying a very very small piece of the cap before they looked too old.
Agaricus xanthodermus
thanks for all the help
