Is it dead?

AFOAF hs about 12 pint jars with BRF and vermiculite. They have taken 20-25 days and they are at about 85% done. He noticed that certain spots seem to be darker and don't look as fluffy? Did some of it die? I keep temps around 80 deg. Also how can I speed up the process?

What kind of vermiculite did you use? I notice that the very fine vermiculite takes double the time for the jars to colonize. I always get the chunky verm

I've only used the chunky style verm. One of my Malabar jars this time around was 100% colonized in 10 days. All the other jars seem to be going just as quickly. I figured the less air space in the fine verm would hinder colonization....

Yeah, it seems like at least in some areas the fine stuff is the only stuff available...my razorbeak duck's took a long time to colonize.

My friend is using the chunky style and the heat sources is a fish tank water heater in a double bin but not it is a dingle bin with heat pad cause it is easy to regulate and they look a little wetish.
