It would take them a LONG time to crack... We are talking YEARS using supercomputers.
96 Characters (upper and lower case, numbers, common symbols like =) in an EIGHT character long password has 7.2 quadrillion combinations. A modern supercomputer would take 83 days...
AES has far more combinations than that... DES the previous standard had 72 quadrillion possibilities... AES has fucking 1.15792089 × 10^77 combinations... and I doubt many of us can fathom how incredibly massive that is.

yeah thats a lot

so you gusy says that it would take how ever many years to go ver all posibble combinations, thats asuming that the computer doesnt find the correct combination before all possible combinations are reached, right?
kinda like you ask me to guess a number 1-10. there are 10 possible answers but i might get it on my first or second guess, the same way it could take these computers years but it cuold also take them only a few days?

Correct, a brute-force attack could get lucky and find the right pass on the first few tries!
However, that kind of thing is likely to never happen.
In your 1-10 example, you have 1/10 chance of finding the correct number on the first try.
Likewise, in the example of aes256, you have a 1/(1.15792089 × 10^77) chance of guessing right on the first try. That is an incredibly small number!!!

yes. you might guess it on your first try. The average time it would take would be a lot less than those massive numbers that have been cited as the time to guess all possible keys - but would still itself, on the average, be a massive number.

the site is still up; the insurance file is an encrypted file which is said to likely contain ALL of the cables. It's mostly just-in-case he goes to prison or gets assassinated; his cause won't be abandoned.
Wikileaks has been releasing cable by cable at a time as they correlate to world events so that's why it's relevant.
The site isn't REALLY down, the clearnet version has been down a LOT lately about half up and half down. Groups working the government have been attacking the main pages but there hundreds of mirror websites that will take it's place should they ever try to remove it.
The real site really only exists within the Tor network as it should.

I think JA turned himself in for his own safety.
Thus there will probably be a huge leak sometime soon, that or it's a lie.

What kind of law is that?? Surely it's not like a felony... Did they seriously extradite him for a misdemeanor?
Feel free to elaborate about how that law works can you have sex with your wife without a condom?

That was my point if even a 7.2 quadrillion combination takes 83 days, can you imagine what stronger encryption would take?
As for your 10^77 statistic, here is a useful factoid to put how large that number is in perspective: There are 10^80 atoms in the observable UNIVERSE! (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeopathic_dilutions)
