24 hour fan, then get cracker dry (storagable) with Damp-Rid (Calcium Chloride i believe) that is the only way to dry them properly, fan drying just doesn't get them dry enough to put in any kind of container with out problems later on.

Food dehydrator is the fastest.

Get an American Harvest Snackmaster model.
You can find them in the 2nd hand stores in like new condition.
Some look like they were never used.
I have picked up several for under $6.00

They go for about $70.00 brand new!

go to a pet store and ask for dessicant

it comes in many different varieties and looks like crystals, every pet store that carries cat litter will have it

Why would I want to buy dessicant when I own several dehydrators?

Dude, drierite is great and all -- used it back in AP Chem years ago. IMO, it is not worth spending like $20 for 12 oz. of lab grade desiccant. Just use damp rid -- I bought a bag of it at the local hardware store for $8. Just dry it in between uses. Using drierite instead of damp-rid is like using a lab autoclave instead of a pressure cooker .... more money for the same end result. Just my 2 cents ....

My friend has found that the most effective way of drying cubes is by first laying them out in front of a fan for 24 - 48 hours. After this he puts them in a dessicant (calcium carbonate) chamber. Calcium carbonate (Damp-Rid, etc.) can be found at any local Home Depot or Lowes.

I disagree 6C   My friend has come across quite a few cracker dry shrooms that had only been air dried.  It does happen, but the dessicant chamber is useful as an added precaution.

I think part of it depends on where you live too (ambient humidity).

The food de-hydrator my buddy bought only has one heat setting. It got up to 195 degrees inside at the lowest rack, and about 165 at the highest rack. So he removed the heating eliment, and just added some damp rid to the bottom of the Dehydrator. The fan Circulates the air, and the Damp rid grabs the moisture from the air. Works like a charm. In about 24-36 hrs, the mushrooms are cracker dry, and ready to be stored.

when the search comes online again have a look for 'Shoe box' it should come up with a dryer made by a friend and posted by me. it saves on desicant big time  only use it to get them finished. the same mate has got them cracker dry with a fan, even in damp old england, but it took ages. spare comuter fan?  make one?

I use enough silica gel in a air-tight container to efficiently dry the mushrooms. I find this an excellent way to make them really crispy bone dry in a short space of time (about 7 days)
