A lot of clumpy white growth... pins coming?

Hi. A friend of mine birthed some cakes just over a week ago. All of them are now covered in various spots by a clumpy white growth. These clumps are around the size of rice crispies, some mabye a little bigger. Some are isolated, others are clumped together. He's satisfied that it is not contamination, since some of it has turned blue from bruising. However, as of yet there are no pins showing. Should he be expecting them soon?

Strain:  B+
Temp: 60F - 70F
Light:  6 - 8 hours (60 watt inc.  4 feet above)
Humidity:  ??? (on top of wet verm. large container (no perlite  :confused:))

Also, he is keeping them on upside-down lids and has noticed condensation forming underneath the bases of the cakes, could this lead to mold or contamination? Is there something better to put them on?

You may want to tell your friend to take or leave this advice, since I'm in the same spot,  but upping the temp to remain between 70-74 deg F may help move the process along.  Also, you may want to find perlite, since I think Verm would only hold more water in rather than let it wick into the air...I think even wet paper towels would work better.  That humidity probably isn't high enough.

Of course, I'm about at the same spot as you and it's been 2 weeks since the earliest ones were birthed and still just those knots of white :frown:

Not much that can be done about the temp for reasons of concealment, at least until the weather warms up around here. I read about using vermiculite as a substitute on here before the search went down and most people seemed to think that it was ok. It's being kept fairly soaked (condensation forming on the sides of the bin) and he thought that it might be too humid ???
