Substrate without Vermiculite
    #1358218 - 03/08/03 11:52 AM (21 years, 1 month ago)

My friend was thinking of cultivating some shrooms and he has studied the different methods the best that he could. He was wondering if there is some way to make/use a substrate that didn't contain any vermiculite (besides whole grain methods)? He would very much appreciate this help.

Yeah, he's read that somewhere. Thanks.

The reason he is asking is because he is wondering if it would be possible to grow shrooms similar to a grain spawn and casing without using a pressure cooker and without vermiculite for the casing soil. Anybody know?
Thanks again!

You can use plain old brown rice but boil it before loading it into your jars to get the right water content.

Would that be sterile enough to protect against contams? My friend has also heard about using a microwave... Has anybody had succes with this? If so, how did they go about doing it?

Well after loading the rice into the jars you gotta sterilize it as the PF tek says.

So you're saying that you can load brown rice grain and water into jars (without vermiculite), sterilize according to PF tek by steaming them, and after innoculation growth should be normal with no contams?

In nature they don't grow with vermiculite. All it does contain best water, but peat moss and dried grass should also work.
I'm curious if there is way to deal with bacteria because can't get away from this contamination?

If you are having problems I suggest that rather than bumping a 12 year old thread you take some pictures of your grow and start a new thread. People respond better in those situations.
