Christianity, Catholocism, and the spirit world

Maybe some of you gurus can help me out here or point me in a certain direction.
I was raised catholic in a very strict catholic household. All of my other siblings (4 in total) are hardcore catholics. My older brother is even studying to be a minister / priest.
Back a few years ago, I started drifting away from the religion. The main reason was that my ideal of love everyone doesn't really seem to be practiced at all by anyone, especially with the persecution of gay people.
Anyways, I never really thought much about religion but the whole shamanistic traditions really intrigue me, and I was wondering if anyone here was from a similar background and if they had any links or materials for me to read up on.
Thanks

Hey there. Although there are people here more knowledgeable on the subject than myself, I'd point you in the direction of Gnosticism if your looking to stay within the Christian tradition. http://www.gnosis.org/naghamm/nhlintro.html The Gospel of Thomas is a good place to start. As far a Shamanism goes, it is one of many traditions which utilized altered states. I've found that the lucid dream/astral projection paradigm is more useful for most people in the West. A good book for that is exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming by Dr. Stephen LaBerge.

I enjoy Castenada's books as a good departure from the norm and into a more shamanic feel. Not to be taken literally, of course, but definitely meant to be taken seriously.

I agree Gnostic scriptures have some great stuff very eye opening.
There are scriptures written by the apostles so in a sense they should be included in the Bible. Funny thing is the Gnostic scriptures can also tie in with Egyptian (Coptic), Greek and Hellenistic influences, as well as the esoteric Judaic.

I would point you in the direction of Gnosticism too, it opens a lot of doors. I got kicked out of catholic school in sixth grade =(, so I threw myself into skepticism. Thanks for the PDF Too!

a good question is:
Would you call Jesus for help?
depending on how you answer that will lead you to your next question.

I recommend this book to everybody, but if your interest extends outside Christianity, Autobiography of a Yogi supplied me with more information than any book I've ever read about these subjects. Especially about the spirit world.
