Catha edulis leaves turning yellow / ligh green
    #13571097 - 12/01/10 11:29 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Is this because of a nutrient deficientcy?

If so, which nute(s)?

My Catha edulis arrived a few days ago and i haven't potted them yet.

If pictures are needed i can provide them

Do you have access with a d-camera? Pictures will help the diagnoses. But I think it could be a case if dehydration but I cannot confirm without pictures.

salt burn or your ph is too high/low

First check your pH then if its in the right range you will need to do some research if thats a water loving plant or dry loving plant and then if its a shade or full sun loving plant.

While your doing your research you can get some soil and foliar samples sent to a lab for about $15 for soil test and $40 for foliar test. that will be all you need to know

undergrad in horticulture

I don't have any PH testing liquid left so that'll have to wait til tomorrow.

They're still in the same soil they came in so...

Catha edulis hate being over-watered and love full sun.

that looks like chlorosis bro...

im not sure what kind of plant that is really but if it were a tree... you can expect the roots to branch out at least half of the height of the tree. and by looking at it, tree or not it could be root bound some.

What do you mean you don't know what type of plant it is? The title of the thread gives it away plus my last post.

What should i do?

i mean i have not done the research. you first need to find a bigger pot, then you need to get the right ph in the soil for that particular plant. the nutes depend on what your trying to do with the plant but after transplant they usually like Phosphorus to develope the roots. after that if you want twig growth you need nitrogen. phosphorus also is good for bud development. potash keeps the plant healthy during drout conditions. potassium does not leech into the soil so it needs tilled in. ummm yea other than salt(nute) burn i would say it could be root bound and or water conditions and possibly bad soil but i would think they would be smart enough to put it in the right soil.

the ph of the water you apply can cause it to flux in the wrong direction so you want to make sure your water is right. nute aka salt burn only happens if you are applying nutes every feeding. they dont need as much nutes as you think they do and if it is salt burn you would want to flush the root ball. im not sure how that would work with a dry loving plant lol.

get a soil test done man, make sure your ph is right. transplant that bitch and you should be golden. you are working with a really delicate plant at this point if that is chlorosis and you gotta be careful of what you do and dont do but whatever that is it needs to be done fast.

there are a lot of other nutes that are needed in the soil mirco and macro nutrients. do some research and you should get her healthy again.

Just potted them in a mix of potting mix, play sand, perlite, vermiculite, phosphate, nitrogen, slow-release fertilizer and many small stones (for drainage).

Hopefully they'll do well

Sounds like a good substrate to me!
whatever you do, don't overwater it.
Catha really hates overwatering IME, this is really the fastest way to kill it.

i'd probs put it in a partly shaded position for the next few weeks to let it acclimatise and overcome transplantation shock (even though they generally love the sun you don't know what kind of sunlight exposure it was receiving under its previous owners conditions and it could go into additional shock and burn if it is not suitably acclimatised). just my 2c

Ok thanks zinyop

The next few days are going to be cloudy and rainy so I didn't water it and I won't need to worry about it getting too much sun

Yer, i remember your post KBG1977. Your Khat looks great

I can get pics but it'll take a few hours due to me not having a camera or phone at the moment.

My Khat is of a different variety to the regular. According to the website it's "quite rare. It has a much stronger growth habit, narrow and strongly serrated, light green leaves and a higher alkaloid content."
:awesome:

Thanks man:)Yeah there are quite a few more types of Khat than I thought:)I've even seen a type that has even thinner, narrower leaves than yours.

"The owner was dismayed at the car loads of Africans who would turnĀ up in the front yard any time of day or night climing the tree and taking away branches"
:lmafo:

I never knew there were so many Khat trees in Australia.

I've seen a few trees which seemed like Khat to me, but then I think to my self, "as if that's Khat. I'm not that lucky."

That article has inspired me to mark ID requests for trees which I think could be Khat.

Thanks for posting
