Say i made just enough for a ticket and maybe a thousand for emergencys/to last me 6 months. Has anyone ever done this? Just kinda wander around europe with little to no money?
How would one find odd jobs here or there? I want to buy a nice road bike and save for a ticket and just ride around europe for a year or so.

much easier to do without the bike. i did just that a few years ago. trams trains walking ferries hitching etc. worked in coffeeshop in amsterdam, picked cherries in france cleaned boats in belgum etc. i dont know how your usa passport would work with visas n that, but in theory i see no problems. like i said tho, the bike may (only may) be a pain. insurance, getting it from usa to here, keeping it safe (you dont want it nicked). mahalos. remember i might be wrong about the bike. it may be real easy. then again it may not. sorry to be vague.

I survived 5 weeks backpacking around Europe on very little money. I spent 5 months in Sweden, where I had a working Visa, but didn't work. I had my return flight already paid for and was just taking it on a whim. I spent around $1700 on a rail pass, and then around $50 or less a day, including accommodation. I don't know if you were planning on doing it even cheaper, but I'm sure it could be. I made sure I had enough money for beer.
Oh yeah, and you would definitely need a Visa for that kind of stay. For Schengen countries, you are able to stay up to 3 months without a Visa, but anything longer you would need one. Working Visas are usually the easiest to acquire, depending on inter-governmental agreements between the US and Schengen countries.

It is very difficult for a US citizen to get a visa to work in Europe and working under the table might be hard to arrange if you are new to an area and don't have any connections.

I think the europe thing will remain a pipe dream for now. Im thinking of biking across america first. I have a fishing quesiton. If I brought a pole with me would i have to boat to the middle of a lake to find any fish or could I fish out of a river or lake on the banks? would bringing a pole be worth it?

Fishing from the banks if often more productive than sitting on a boat in the middle of a lake with your bait on the bottom. There is vegetation around the banks of lakes/rivers and in this vegetation dwell all types of creatures that fish love to feed on.

u need at least a grand in traveler checks to show to the border guards when u get off your plane , most of the time they dont ask but if they do and u dont have it , they will probably send u back i,m sure u could find casual work over there , alot of the country,s in europe are virtual socialism entities, alot easier to live in then the usa

I'm about to do this now. Getting a one way ticket to Spain. I'm being a super hobo though. Living in a tent, eating trail mix, shitting in a bush. I'll probably get a room every now and again for a nice bed and shower.
I have savings to fall back on - I wouldn't want to do it without enough money for everything needed. Food, drink, occasional room and enough for a ticket home to friendly faces.
You wanna think about where you are going as well because you always need to communicate with people - even if justs to ask them to fill up your water bottle. Sweden, Belgium and Netherlans you will find most people have English as a second language but its not spoken much in other EU countries and they will often refuse to talk to you or help you if you have made no effort to learn the basics of their language.

Czech, Hungary and surrounding countries are quite cheap and allot of fun. Western Europe is quite expensive so a 1000 bucks won't last you long. Best bet is Eastern Europe.

Do it! The people of the EU are as unique and interesting as any place on this rock. Get a pocket language guide for each region, or one of them there fancy translators... android and all those have apps for these things..... Pocket fisherman would be great for catching fish on a biking journey! Good luck, keep a journal BC

depends how you do it. if you couch surf the whole way and eat cheaply that could last you at least a month. that is assuming the return flight isnt coming out of that $1000.. if thats the case you may as well just stay home.

It's possible, but highly illegal and requires a degree of resourcefulness. Most people don't want to hire your illegal ass.
