leaving jars unattended

I'm reading this book where this guy innoculates some jars and then puts them in a dark place with no heater (so they'd be at like 68 degress) and just leaves them unatended for about 10 days? He wanted to get them started early since he had no heater. I was just wondering if this would be possible in real life. There doesn't seem to be much you need to do in this first stage but If they started to contam would they stink up his whole house? Was it even worth it for this guy to go through all the trouble of getting supplies and then try and grow without a heater.

Y not get a heater of somekind today.. You can find lots of shity heaters everywhere.. Try junk shops, pawn shops or grandmas basment...

The jars will still grow; they will just grow more slowly. IME, contaminted jars do not smell unless you stick your nose into them. :grin:

Yes you could start jars at 68 degrees F.
They would take alot longer to start and alot longer to finnish colonizing.
But yes you can.

I personally have incubators...they are like switching from Cable internet service from Dial Up internet service...there is no going back to slow service once you tried the faster.

They wouldn't stink up the whole house...but they can smell unpleasant after getting a contam....especially a bacterial contam.

cool so I guess it would work. he can't get a heater because he will be gone for 10 days. what types of heaters can be safely left on for days unattended?

submersible aquarium heaters can be left on all the time.

on there names, that means they have mushrooms for sale.

Roadkill, what do you mean by incubators? Could you describe in some detail what you use for an incubator? Heat doesn't come heat at my house, I need to keep my shit warm so it will actually grow at a decent speed...
