my question is this:
does this mean that life is more likely to exist out "there" because the requirements to life as we knew it, are completely horseshit and not the requirements we thought they were?
hasn't it been speculated before that if we ever encountered alien life we wouldnt be able to understand them?
i am le confused.
what does this discovery mean?
It means we actually proved that life is possible in an environment containing elements other than what "life as we know it" uses as building blocks. Before it was just speculation, now it has been proven.
Given the harsh, unEarth-like conditions on a lot of planets, this suggest that life may even be possible on those planets.
i really hope life out there doesnt want to eat life down here.

I've always felt that what most people relay as planets that could support life may not always be accurate, look at the extreme conditions that Tardigrades can endure, terrestrial critter, it leads me to believe that the truth will always hold true "the more we learn, the more we stand around with our thumbs in our asses wondering just how much more we'll never know"

They still use carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur as the building blocks for life. These new bacteria don't.
And supposing it's even real? Take that to the conspiracy forum.

Because even the communities that spring up around volcanic vents at the bottom of the ocean are made up (from what we can tell) of the same basic components as all other life on the planet. This thing is different!

Well, a very well respected scientist presented the findings to NASA. They documented their materials and methods very well, they have found that arsenate backbones in DNA spontaneously form in solution, and the bacteria replicated in an environment devoid of phosphorus but rich in arsenic and they have electron micrographs(pictures) of the bacteria that grew. I'd say that's pretty good proof it's real.

The fact that I am here has to be the case or I wouldn't be able to consider the issue. As such it doesn't tell me much about the existence of life in other locations. At most it suggests that life is possible which again, has to be the case....
