- 1967: The Rolling Stones released the single for "In Another Land"
Quote:
"In Another Land" is a song by Bill Wyman, and the third track on The Rolling Stones album Their Satanic Majesties Request. It was released as a single a week before the album.
Written by bassist Bill Wyman, "In Another Land" is the only Rolling Stones song to feature Wyman on lead vocals, and one of only two Rolling Stones songs to be written by him (the other being "Downtown Suzie"). The single was released in December 1967, credited to Bill Wyman, with the Stones' "The Lantern" as the B-side. It peaked at number 87 on the United States pop chart.
Background
The song was recorded on a night when Wyman had shown up to the studio and found that the session had been cancelled. Feeling frustrated that he had potentially wasted time in driving to the studio, engineer Glyn Johns asked him if he had anything that he'd like to record. "...I'd been messing with this song. It was a bit... what I thought was kind of spacy, you know... a bit kind of Satanic Majesties-like. And psychedelic in a way."
Lyrically, Wyman stated that "The idea for the song is about this guy who wakes up from a dream and finds himself in another dream." The song describes events that transpire in a dreamlike state: “ We walked across the sand And the sea and the sky and the castles were blue I stood and held your hand And the spray flew high and the feathers floated by I stood and held your hand ”
Johns showed the song to singer Mick Jagger, and guitarists Keith Richards and Brian Jones who all liked it and decided to include it on the record.
The musicians on the song are Wyman on lead vocals and bass, Small Faces vocalist Steve Marriott on 12-string acoustic guitar and backing vocals, Ronnie Lane of the Small Faces on backing vocals, Nicky Hopkins on harpsichord, mellotron and piano, Charlie Watts on drums, with Jagger and Richards adding backing vocals at a later stage of the recording and Richards also plays guitar.
At the conclusion of the track as heard on the album, Wyman himself can be heard snoring. He was unaware this had been tagged onto his song until he first played the completed album. He learned later that one night when he had fallen asleep in the studio, Jagger and Richards miked him up and recorded him snoring, and stuck it onto his track as a joke. This does not appear on the single.
Personnel
* Bill Wyman – Vocals, bass guitar * Charlie Watts – Drums * Nicky Hopkins – Piano, organ, harpsichord, Mellotron * Ronnie Lane – Backing vocals * Steve Marriott – Backing vocals, 12-string acoustic guitar * Mick Jagger – Backing vocals * Keith Richards – Acoustic guitar, backing vocals

- 1971: William Weeks is busted for LSD manufacturing
Quote:
December 2nd 1971 "Early morning raid on farmhouses sheriff's raid nets huge drug apparatus"
One of the largest narcotics raids of record resulted early this morning in the arrests of seven persons at two locations in southern Mendocino County. A force of 30 men representing the federal and state bureaus of narcotics, the Mendocino County sheriff's department and the Sonoma County sheriff's department, swooped down at 3:50 a.m. on two farmhouses, one on Mountain House Road, and the other on Highway 128, two and one- half miles west of Mountain House Road. The raiders were led by Sheriff Reno Bartolomie with District Attorney Duncan James and Deputy District Attorney Bill Neill participating. There was no resistance. During a press conference called at 11:15 a.m., Sheriff Bartolomie withheld certain details due to the possibility of jeopardizing prosecution of the defendants in this county. Sheriff Bartolomie indicated that laboratory equipment seized had the capability of producing what he termed "billions of LSD tablets," A portion of the lab equipment was seized at the Mountain House residence. The balance was stored, according to the sheriff, in "a local warehouse." The sheriff refused to comment as to whether the term "local" meant Ukiah. The raiders were armed with search warrants issued by the local court. In custody awaiting filing of formal charges and arraignment are husband and wife William H. Weeks, 25, charged with conspiracy to manufacture, transporting and sale of drugs; and Anita Josephine Weeks, 25, conspiracy to manufacture and possession of drugs. Also in custody are John E. Hamilton, 41, booked for conspiracy to manufacture drugs, manufacture of LSD and possession of marijuana; his wife, Rosalind Hamilton, 24, conspiracy to manufacture, possession, transportation and sale, and manufacture of LSD; Barry J. Orlando, 26, possession of dangerous drugs, transportation and sale; and Stephen A. Abruzzo, 22, possession, transportation and sale, and his wife, Marion J. Abruzzo, 20, possession of marijuana. Sheriff Bartolomie indicated that there was evidence of recent manufacture. The case had been under investigation for the last four years by federal agencies and for several months here.

Figured I'd throw this in a thread since it's from 12/2/1968. Jumping one year ahead of you there. I have a good bit of old psychedelic newspaper articles in PDF and this is one for today so why not

I love it! Thanks so much! You might want to consider rescanning it though. The text is a little hard to read. My scanner does the same thing to text when you try to resize it or something.

Actually the articles I obtained were all from searching various free online newspaper archives, where the editions of the papers were already in PDF format. Unfortunately the quality can't be upgraded as far as I know, though some do appear more legible than others.
If you're interested in taking a search through such archives this is a fantastic site to start with - http://freenewspaperarchives.us/default.aspx
Glad you liked it though I look at the history threads quite a bit on when I occasionally visit the site, I'll try to contribute a bit more to them going forward

From the 12/2/1968 edition of the Plattsburgh Press Republican:

Quote:
LSD loaded like dynamite By Lester Coleman, M. D.
How Dangerous can LSD be if so many young people are taking it?
It is almost four years since I wrote about the dangers of LSD, denouncing its experimental use on Harvard students. Since then hundreds of thousands of cases of severe and sometimes permanent aftereffects have been reported in young people who take "trips" in total ignorance of its hazards. In major cities more than fifty cases a month are admitted to psychiatric wards. Many of these people have their lives permanently threatened by the thrill of an LSD experience.
How often have we seen youngsters walking close to a third rail, tempting fate and enjoying the thrill of tottering on the brink of destruction? How often have we seen inexperienced climbers tempting fate by walking as close to a precipice as possible? How often have we seen swimmers hundreds of yards from shore despite the warning signals of danger? Whether or not they are motivated by the same reason as those who rebel against authority with the easy way out of LSD, is not significant.
That which is important is that LSD can be a threat to the permanent health, physical and emotional, of the person tempted to use it. I have heard all the arguments of the high school students in their ignorance "know" all the answers about the safety of pot, speed, and smack. There is no more difficult problem than to combat ignorance that masquerades as truth.
LSD is available, but so are guns with which to play Russian roulette. Too often the adolescent has a simple excuse when his best friend has been killed by such nonsense. "I did not know it was loaded when we began the game" or "I'm sorry" or "we were only kidding" has never brought life back to the victim.
LSD is loaded dynamite. LSD is playing Russian roulette with all six barrels filled with lead. LSD is going over Niagara Falls in a barrel. LSD is deadly. An LSD trip is not the way for modern youth to buy himself status. Those who in their ignorance threaten each other's lives by temptations of destruction must be controlled by teaching.
"Square" parents must impress on their children that the danger of LSD is as great as lighting a cigarette with a stick of dynamite.

Awesome. Thanks. I could read it before though. It's just a little harder to read. I love how the guy compares taking LSD to playing Russian roulette with six bullets in the chamber. O'rly? So you have a 100% chance of dying if you take acid? No wonder kids didn't listen.

It's funny to look back in history and see the level of propaganda/scare tactics that surrounded LSD in the 60s when it was still relatively unknown by the greater public. There was no internet and little to no literature available about it, and what information that was available typically couldn't be found at your local library etc.

Vintage LSD articles are funny. Learyfan is an encyclopedia of interesting psychedelic tidbits.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15442494/page/1
Saw that today on the news headlines. Shit is really starting to come together with the legal research of psychedelics, primarily with Psilocybin and LSD. Imagine where we could be if studies had been able to carry on since the late 60s/early 70s when they were completely shut down.

Here's an early take of "In Another Land". Apparently the working title of the song was "Acid In The Grass", but I'm not sure when the title changed. There's an earlier take of the song out there, under that name, but maybe I'll post that another time. For now, here's a slightly earlier take of IAL.

Coming up!
-------------------- Difficulty has more to do with reading abillity and ability to precisely follow directions. You need no knowledge of chemistry whatsoever, you just need to understand some basic principles as simple in concept as: water boils at 100C and freezes at 0C. Otherwise all published syntheses of organic and inorganic compounds can be reproduced successfully by pretty nearly anyone with at least average intelligence. Problems always have to do with availability of materials, not esoteric knowledge.
